People are saying Benteke bailed him out but surely Sherwood gets some credit for getting him playing well and scoring again.

For sure. He's definitely got a knack for picking up a flagging player and getting them going again.

I agree. I'm not a fan of him and don't think he'll become a good manager. But I think it's a bit weak to say a player saved him when he clearly had input in getting Benteke playing well.

Yeah, IIRC, it was taking him a while to get back to full fitness, and by the time he got there, Sherwood was manager.

At the same time if he didn't have benteke at all he'd have been fucked. He was lucky he had the calibre of player in bentekkers to wind back up and put out there.

Yeah but it was also evident that Benteke got a clear run, injury free, which clearly helped him.

So whilst I'm not denying Sherwood played a part, I'd wager it was just as much to do with overcoming a long term injury, if not more so.

It's not so much that he lost to Arsenal in the Cup Final, it's that they were never in that game. They never even threatened and to be honest, the scoreline flattered them. If Arsenal had won that final 10-0, it would have been a fairer reflection of what is one of the most one-sided major finals that I have ever seen.

To say that Villa looked like a naive bunch of chancers understates just what happened on that pitch out there and it was deja vu watching Tim's Spurs team play the big teams.

Although in his defence in both cases of managerial experience he has had, he's not had his own transfer window to shape the squad.

Saying that, he might claim that the Villa squad is only set up for playing attacking football, but the Spurs squad he inherited from AVB was set up for the opposite, but he still chose to play two wingers, Chadli and Eriksen in midfield and two forwards upfront and lump the ball towards Adebayor at every opportunity.

So I'm not sure it's the personnel, it's just what Tim falls back on, it works against many teams, if you've got the quality of attacker (e.g. Adebayor/Eriksen/Benteke), but against any teams of quality playing anywhere decent, his team gets their bollocks handed to them steaming on a platter with a side plate of fajitas.

Didn't he miss the first two or three months of the season? It's probably reasonable to suggest had he been fit all season Villa wouldn't have been as low down as they were come February.

Benteke played 18 games and scored 3 before Tim can in and scored 12 in 16 afterwards. His fitness came back surprisingly quickly after he arrived.

With the service Villa provided Benteke under Lambert it would not have much mattered if he had been fit as a butcher's dog. Villa were headed for the drop, which with the team they have they should not have been. Tim kept them up, as I suspect any half decent manager could have done.

It has been hit and miss for Tim at Villa so far, as it was at Spurs. Some excellent performances and some terrible ones. The issue is whether he can achieve any consistency once he has had the chance to build a squad and work with them in pre-season, or whether Jekyll and Hyde performances are in Tim's footballing DNA.

I suspect the answer will be a bit of both, that they will show improvement, and put relegation fodder to the sword with aplomb, while still putting in the ocassional horror show. It won't be dull being a Villa fan at any rate, and there is something to be said for that.

What did you think of Tim's "I've told half of this lot they aren't wanted" post cup final speech ? He milks the credit when his teams win, blames everyone else when they don't. Another thing we saw plenty of.
