Where is Wimmer?

What?

I'm not sure there is more that the manager can do.

We have the best central defensive combination in the league, and probably one of the best in Europe. Why should he break that up in league and Champions League games just to give games to a player that might be unhappy with his opportunities?

The risk outweighs the reward for me.

I agree... however, squad rotation is a must if we want our key players to be able to perform at their best for the final act of the season.

Nah, I agree with that and I think it will be particularly necessary during the Christmas/New Year period.

But apart from the league cup game there haven't been any opportunities to rotate much of the first 11, but particularly the centre backs.

He is a great young talent I'd hate to see him go to someone else to undoubtably prove his defensive talents. There is also an argument to be had that our end of season tail-off so to speak coincided with Wimmer being dropped when Jan became fit again last season. I don't think it's as simplistic as that but I firmly believe he should of stayed in the side as his performances merited it.

The tail off coincided with Dembele and Alli being out the team, completely ruined our balance and confidence plus mentally we were drained, don't know if Wimmer being in the side would have changed anything personally.

To be fair there's no reason why we can't use him in the odd game whether it's the CL or PL, barely noticed a difference when he came in for Vertonghen last season.

Pochettino already said that Vertonghen is a player who he rates as he has more as he is a leader and has more experience, something that may not been seen in pure ability but it seems that he is a key player mentally.

It's unfortunate for Wimmer as he's at the age where he needs to be getting regular games and it's hard to see him getting that over Vertonghen unless he gets an injury again.

That could well be said as well I wasn't personally endorsing the theory but do stand by saying he did absolutely nothing wrong and was faultless when called upon.

Been terrible for Austria against Serbia. Playing as a kind of left wing back, looks like a fish out of water. Seemed out of position for Serbia's 2nd and was Fazioesque for their 3rd. Really not gonna do his confidence any good.

Good player but Jan's another level and should play when fit regardless. It's a Lloris/Vorm situation, he's a high quality backup, but still a backup, and deservedly so.

This is where his unhappiness would have started from I suspect. I think the manager made a mistake dropping him straight away but I understand why he did it.

It's difficult for everyone now. I can understand the player being frustrated but Poch has to understand that as well and the reasons for it. Wimmer needs to ask himself whether he wants to stay or go but I think letting him leave in January would be a mistake as one of the main two is bound to get injured.

Agreed & despite CCV looking good, I don't think he's ready for regular EPL & CL games at this stage.

Vertonghen has started all the PL and CL matches, and Wimmer played in the EFL Cup- did you expect any different?

Hence why I said I was speculating.

Although Bentaleb played the odd 20 minutes here and there towards the end of last season...

It's weird as last season he was sensible and realised he had Alderweireld and Vertonghen in front of him and there hasn't really been many chances for him to play.

He only needs to be patient though as I'm sure match after champions league matches he'll get a game and definitely during league and FA cup matches.

This will be a tough one to balance, becuase he got a shot last year and looked great and now wants to be playing regularly and you can't blame him for that. For me though if he does become unhappy and wants to move we will definitely make some decent money on him. However i hope it doesn't come to this, the only saving grace is i rate Niklas Sule higher than this guy and would see him as the perfect guy to bring in (albeit there will be huge amount of competition) - guy is a monster and would beat most players in the air and physcially, something we lack at the back and better than Wimmer in those departments.

Best defence and defensive we've had at the club in my lifetime. Problem for him is CCV also looks like a quality player. Hopefully we will have good cup runs and him and CCV will get all of those games.

I guess the only advantage of being in the EL over the CL is you can rotate more. There's no way Poch can drop Verts or Alerweireld in any of our upcoming league or CL games if both are fit. The points are too important and the Belgians are solid as at the moment.
