"It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory."

William Edward Nicholson, MBE

Bill would have gone for Option B I think.

Yes, Cos, but is that aiming high in terms of immediate or delayed gratification:shrug:

Bill did make it a primary aim to be in Europe it's true and I so wish he was still with us so we could ask him this very question.

My main argument, as stated above, for not choosing B, is that we can't 'just' assume that things would sta the same if we lost the final AND therefore failed to qualify for Europe. We could end up loosing our best players and (heaven forbid) doing a Leeds:eek:mg:

Option B, all day long.

I shouldn't need to explain why, so I won't.

Back in Bill's day, winning a trophy was the be all and nothing else equaled success.
Unfortunately things have changed, thats why alot of us voted CL qualification over Fa Cup last season.
Today bill would have had to re assess what he thought equals success, and don't be suprised if he chose CL and keeping our top stars over winning a trophy. It's one of those we will never really know.
But he was a man ahead of his time, i'm sure he wouldn't have stood still, and have adapted his targets to assure the club he loved so dearly, never fell behind.

5th in the league behind Chelsea in 4th and in the CL final in a winner takes all match v ... you guessed it ... Chelsea. Beat them and steal their CL place for next season as well. That would be beautiful!

But that isn't even part of the hypothetical question - that is just getting to the final (no, I know, ELY, you are an Option A fella).
Yeah, great, we lose the final, spend 10 years in the wilderness, ala Leeds, after going so close to actually establishing ourselves as a top club again AT LAST, but we can reassure ourselves through all of our bleak years that we 'nearly' won the CL once:hump:

But what if we do?

BUT...we don't know either way, whereas with Option 1 we are being guaranteed a place at the top table, and one step closer to reeatablishing ourselves as one of the top clubs in the country.

You are not being guaranteed winnig the CL - which would be a no-brainer. And no-one is saying they don't want to reach the CL final - of course they do. But, as a hypothetical question Option 1 guarantees progress, whereas Option 2 carries a massive risk that we could go into a decline we are only just recovering from.

There's no guarantee of progress with option 1 (it's not like we've got a shiny new striker by qualifying for it this season).

What better way to announce yourself at the top table that potentially winning the damned thing. The chance to make history. The chance to be the team that everyone is talking about. The chance to add to our trophy cabinet. The chance to have a victory parade. The chance to say "I was there when Spurs won the European Cup". The chance to welcome back Luka Modric in 20 years time and being announced as "European Cup Winner". The chance to be the first London club to win it. The chance to sing "it's lucky for Spurs when the year ends in one". The chance to have your photo taken next to the trophy.

Yes indeed Matty. The chance for glory and to be written into the history books of football.

I'll take that every time.

...but, what if we dont win? We are not at the top table, we are in the second tier AGAIN! therefore equalling a step back.

There is no guarantee of getting a top notch striker on form, but we stand a better chance of obtaining one having qualified for the CL second season running, than we do losing in the final...

We would all love to see us win the CL, but 'you gotta be in it, to win it'.
One shot at it= slim chance (but still a chance).
Continued qualification and growth = many chances growing in possibility of actually winning it.

Lets not get impatient, thats where rape derives from, and we dont wanna be rapists!
(unless rape equates to CL success, in which case Rape-up lads, rape-up!)

I'll say it again. What if we do win. How fucking amazing would that be.

In 30 years time, do you expect to see "qualified for Champions League two consecutive seasons" on our honours board. Even Champions League runners up would get on there, and that's worst case scenario in the options given.

We'll sruvive a season without the champions league should we not make it. We're financially well run not to depend on it. It could act as a motivator for the lads next season if we missed out but had go to the final. I'd not expect anyone to leave next season if that were the case.

But again, what if we actually went on and won it.

Finishing 4th isn't 'guaranteeing progress' it is progress. For a start, being in the CL AGAIN and having handled ourselves so eye-catchingly well this time out, that IS going to make us more attractive to potential top-line signings in the Summer. Secondly, if you have been reading threads, you would know that this year's performances in the CL have been winning us global attraction, and this will continue with continued qualification.

All of your arguments are STILL based on the notion that reaching the final, ala the hypothetical question, equates to winning the trophy - it doesn't. Failing to win it and failing to qualify for the CL via league position could very well equal terminal decline. Finishing 4th DOES = progress. I refuse to accept any of your arguments asa valid, until you begin to weigh of the possibility of winning the final, as you persist in waxing lyrical about, with the possibility of losing the final, not qualifying for the CL, and suffering a decline.

I repeat, if it was posited that we would WIN the final it would be a no-brainer as we would also be qualifying for the CL next year.
