I don't believe so, no.

Judas was never permanent captain, but like Scott Parker did cover for a few matches while Alan Shearer was unavailable during his stint. A couple of years back he made a massive media stink about this, claiming he would've been permanent captain for a decade if he was white.

Yeah I remember that. It had more to do with the fact that he was an absolute nutcase and completely unreliable

What year was that in?

I'm guessing the early 60s. Would have made our team in more immense!

Ron Greenwood was no gentleman, in 1966 screwed Bobby Moore out of his dream transfer to us by telling him he wouldn't sell so he'd have to come to us for free by running down his contract if he wanted it that bad, but that if he did that he lose his World Cup spot as sir Alf wasn't picking any out of contract players. Basically Moore had to choose between coming to us, or extending with West Ham to save his World Cup place. Greenwood was a ****.

Harsh on Moore

Given the tough circumstances, at least Moore made the right decision though

I think a perfectly qualified black candidate in the late 90s would have likely been overlooked.

I think Judas would've made a terrible captain no matter his race. No loyalty, no self-awareness, and a huge victim complex. He's the last man you'd ever want leading the dressing room. But I do agree race would've been an issue even if he was otherwise suitable: I think a perfectly qualified black candidate in the late 90s would have likely been overlooked.

Maybe in the late 80s, certainly not in the late 90s

That's sort of right but not totally.

Greenwood did indeed use the threat of letting his contract run down so he couldn't go to the world cup. But there was no such thing as a Bosman free transfer in 1966.

He would have been in limbo until/if West Ham agreed to sell him regardless of having a contract. They had his registration and that's what a club would have had to buy.

This is what Bosman fought against in the 90's.
It makes sense, it stopped clubs just refusing to sell players but had implications that we all know about.

Either way, Ron Greenwood being a **** stopped us getting Bobby Moore as he blackmailed him via his international career.

Moore never forgave him.
