The club is in dire straits largely because of their idiot fans who spent so much time bitching and whining that their manager let them in mid table for a relegation struggler just to get away from them.

They had a nice little thing going. An owner who was investing money in the right kind of players from value markets, a manager who was a bit of a twat - was never going to overachieve but who at least knew how to manage clubs on limited resources.
Were they not wildly inconsistent under Pardew?

Yes, but I don't think it was ever terminal inconsistency. Don't get me wrong I don't overly rate Pardew and he is a bit of a twat, but I think he was doing an OK job. It was the fans who bitched and moaned and made the job untenable because they were incapable of accepting the realities of their situation.

I would like it to be Chelsea, Newcastle and Sunderland who get relegated but I think it will be Norwich, Sunderland and Villa who will get relegated.

I am pretty sure you have said that he is a shit coach. What do you mean by terminal inconsistency? Do you think they should be happy just to avoid relegation every year? How do you rate Ashley as an owner/chairman? What do you think of his managerial appointments?

Newcastle were truly terrible last night, a shocking defence and all of their new signings on show were shit. Just watching Townsend makes you realise he will never change how he plays, no matter if he's on the left or right side. A bit off topic but Lennon seems to have his confidence back.

Playing really well at the moment.

Just in time for us to see Walker at RB and Lennon at RW for England in the Euros. At which point presumably @Bus-Conductor 's head will explode :)

I don't think a club with their wage bill and revenues should settle for avoiding relegation every year, but I don't think their fans were particularly realistic either, I think they were struggling to come to terms with their reality, and that was that their wage bill was in the same ball park as about ten other teams, all vying for the 7-17 places.

I think, like most owners, Ashley has made mistakes, but he's actually put in a large chunk of his own money (about 200m+ last time I looked) to rescue them and get them back in the Prem, and I think he's also tried to do the right thing in bringing in people to oversee the day to day running of the club, introduce a sensible player recruitment policy and try to get the club run on a sustainable footing.

I wouldn't want Pardew, I don't overly rate him, but before the fans started bitching they were mid table, and other managers with bigger profiles hadn't done much better.

Ashley has sampled the delights of Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear, Alan Shearer, Chris Hughton, Alan Pardew, John Fucking Carver and Steve McClaren. Awesome.

According to my research, Keegan was his first managerial appointment.

I think Allardyce was actually appointed 8 days before Ashley officially took over the club, whether he was par of that decision I'm not sure.

He certainly saved the club from a dire financial predicament.

Think Fat Sam will save Sunderland they should have beaten City the other night and I think they have enough fire power to do enough to survive. Newcastle however look in serious trouble as do Norwich, Villa just LOL
Don't think Fat Sam has the time to save them.

That squad is shambles and the defense, the most crucial element for Sam is an absolute shambles and he still hasn't got it right.

I think by the time he does it will be too late and the damage will be done.

I don't know, I was just recently discussing Pardew with a friend in relation to the "we draw too many games" talk.

The thing with Pardew is he seems to eventually breed a loser mentality into his teams.

Against us recently he said he really wanted a draw just to stop the slide. Even the most negative Pulis sides still go in with the try and knick a greasy win and draw at worst mentality.

Pardew seems to join clubs and get plenty of wins+losses which looks good on points early, but to me it breeds that loser mentality - That losing is OK. Things will just work themselves out and the team loses its fight. It happened at Newcastle and it looks like it could be happening at Palace.

Lots seemed to criticize the amount of draws we had earlier, but I think from a mentality standpoint it helped keep the team hungry and fighting. Even if mathematically we were better off picking up more losses + more wins.

I actually think Palace might get dragged into the relegation battle.

Would love to see it.

Personally I like the Palace fans, but Pardew is such a wanker that I'll never not relish seeing his ship sink.

Well big win for Sunderland today. Unless Newcastle turnaround impressively and quickly then it is between Norwich and Sunderland for the last spot.

Norwich are still above them, today will mean nothing if Sunderland can't kick on.

Very impressive how Swansea kicked on after I'd tipped them down in this poll, btw.

Sunderland have a game in hand and Norwich have a bitch of a run in.

Bournemouth were one of my tips and they have done very well to continue their good start.

Yes I saw the run-ins compared, I also think Sunderland will do it. Was certain this was going to be their year to drop.

Yeah I have Norwich kicking the bucket and Sunderland staying up, tbh they always do this amazing powers of recovery in the last few games of the season all the frigging time.
