Why did one of our fans do this?

I don't really care. Fans sing, shout, scream, mutter, whisper, and say shit constantly every single match day, and most of it is not suitable behaviour. One banner makes not a shite of difference.

The only reason I'd say this is in bad taste is because it's obviously not a fully serious protest banner or anything and so kind of seems disrespectful to the girl and her family.

On the flip side, fuck Alonso. He committed manslaughter at best and second degree murder at worst and yet didn't spend a day behind bars and probably paid the girl's family a few weeks wages at most? I can't believe more isn't made of it to be honest, I only found out about it a few months ago. The guy should be in prison.

He gets off light in England compared to what Lee Hughes and Ched Evans had to encounter. The fella was driving 70mph in a 30mphwhile being over the limit killing his passenger. If he had donethat in England the fans would rip into him every week

Forget the fans. Over here causing death by dangerous driving, while under the influence of alcohol and going at over double the speed limit, would have a starting point of eight years in custody. And rightly so.

The strange thing about the non-reaction to it over here is the grief dished out to players & sportsmen who have committed far lesser offences. Look at the stick Andre Gray got for a tweet he sent out years ago. Tyson Fury got unbelievable stick for his religious beliefs. There's even been the odd murmuring about our own Aurier of late, with pundits bringing up his previous comments about and arguments with Blanc etc
Then you have the Alonso incident. Killing someone because he's drunk at the wheel? That's the actions of a complete scumbag, yet nothing has ever been made of it.

It’s a bit of a low blow but he did kill a women through drink driving then allegedly pay the girls family to avoid jail. Let’s not feel too bad for him.

Is that true, how the fuck can that be right.

What a deterrent that is.

Surely the legal system has a strict obligation to the rest of the public to set the appropriate sentence?

The fact he is a very well off footballer shouldn't have anything to do with the sentence passed.

If anything, they should be making an example out of him.

He murdered someone and we're complaining about a banner?

Let's be real here, if the family wasn't paid off by him, they would hold the fucking banner themselves.

It's a joke that he didn't even spend a day behind bars for this and yet we are debating the moral standing of the banner.

I understand that there is a need for respect for the family, but I wouldn't put that above protecting a murderer who chose to drive drunk and over double the speed limit. If the banner wasn't presented the matter wouldn't come to light. So yes it's bad taste, but it's worse to kill an innocent person.

I doubt the maker created the banner to highlight the evils of drink driving. Fuck Alonso though. He walked away with less than a slap on the wrist, so let him take his medicine.

He may have paid some sort of compensation to the family but its out of the family's hand if the state decides to prosecute and the sentence that is meted out. It would be different if it was a civil matter. What is disgusting is the sentencing.

Yeah I do agree, let him live with himself everyday for what he did. That's enough.

I have to disagree, he probably doesn't give a shit. He's just happy he didn't get his arse ragged in jail!

A bit harsh we have no idea how he feels, what he did as terrible, but if we're gonna make people pay for mistakes they have made forever we may just throw them in fail for life or ship them of to an island somewhere. I'm pretty sure he didn't set out to "kill" anyone but he certainly was completely irresponsible and it cost a young girl her life. He just happens to be lucky enough to be a top level sportsman, we have no idea how he feels personally. I mean Kluivert done basically the same thing (without the alcohol) and he has played and managed at the top level, he is even a pundit, no one bats an eyelid. Actually he only got community service.

When somebody does what Alonso did the actions speak for themselves - people can make up their own minds but when one of our fans acts like a tit and produces a banner like this (that will obviously not assist the victim or her family one bit) then it just looks stupid and petty.

It then gives the football world the chance to sit in judgement of the fan and not the original crime. Alonso becomes the victim.

No purpose whatsoever served by this.

Sorry but the bloke is utter scum, killed a girl by drunk driving then bought his way out of it.

Should be reminded at every opportunity.

It's disappointing the club has gone that route but given the PR probably thought that's they had to.

Sad state of affairs when you can drink, drive and kill someone, yet we have to be mindful of his precious feelings.

Even more sad is how the Evening Standard reported it. "referring to the car crash Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso was involved six years ago, which resulted in the death of a young woman" . Can they downplay this crime any more? They are almost apologetic to him.

Also the old "doing the time" doesn't mean you can take the piss out of the system and then we all have to forget it ever happened.
