You say you don't know the details. This may help from Wiki.
"On 2 May 2011, Alonso was arrested following his involvement in a car accident in Madrid. He was the driver of a car that collided with a wall, killing one of the passengers, a 19-year-old woman, having been driving at 112.8 km/h (70 mph) in wet conditions in a 50 km/h (30 mph) zone, with a blood alcohol level of 0.93 mg per millilitre of blood.[23][24] He faced 21 months in prison when sentenced in February 2016, but his punishment was changed to a €61,000 fine and a driving ban of three years and four months, which had already been spent."
That's not what I said.

It is a terrible thing that happened, absolutely awful and a young woman lost her life but the truth is we don't know how Alonso feels about it. We don't know if he wakes up in cold sweats every night, we don't know if he undergoes counselling, we don't know if he visits her family, we don't know if he felt he should be punished more severely and was talked out of it by advisers/family, in short we don't know.

I hate Chelsea as much as any one but life can be complicated and making judgements on such serious matters without all the details serves no purpose.
Nope. I could care less if he wakes up with cold sweats every night. It's no less than he deserves. He de facto murdered a girl then paid off her family to make it go away. There will never be any excuse for that kind of behavior. There is no way to spin that into a positive. It's absolutely disgusting.

I also read that due do his uncle being a Real Madrid legend and all the political shit that goes with that helped him in his case of being able to just pay them off and hear nothing more of him being a murderer.

"Couldn't"

Could make zero sense in the context you are trying to use it.

Except he didn't murder anyone. You're just choosing to use that word for sensationalism. Be pissed as much as you like but your outrage should be directed at the Spanish courts/justice system. I can't help thinking certain people wouldn't care as much if it wasn't a Chelsea player.

I find the article more offensive than the banner. Dude was responsible for killing a girl, nobody should let something like that go. Why does he deserve for it to be brushed under the rug?

I did not try to spin the situation into a positive in any way. In fact the reverse - the situation is negative and can only be made more so by stupid banners from opposition fans. It only makes the fans look stupid and insensitive.

What good can come of a banner like this?

I didn't realise so many people were involved in the case and have such in-depth knowledge to cast their views upon it.

More high-horses than the grand national :woot:

I agree with you about the banner. It’s cringeworthy. I posted the same thing earlier this thread. I could care less about his feelings though. I think what he did in this situation and especially his actions after afterwards are despicable.

Why did a footballer get away with prison sentence when a normal member of public would be behind bars, also 60k fine, thats is peanuts mayve 3 days pay for him ... any way yes agree its in very bad taste and should not joked about as someones innocent life was taken

What actions?

He paid off the family of the victim. The charge was then brushed aside in court with a whiff of corruption surrounding it. He never showed any remorse that I know of. At least publicly. He pretty clearly was able to do these things just because he’s a famous athlete. You’d honestly be ok with this if it was your own daughter? Do you honestly believe you would receive the same treatment Alonso did had you been caught in the exact same situation he did? If he served some jail time, got out and showed some remorse, I’d probably be willing to set it aside and give him a second chance. But he did none of those things.

The most worrying thing about this whole argument is if Alonso hadn't of scored 2 goals and won the game against us I doubt the banner never mind this whole thread would exist. Depressing times TBH.
