Comolli has brought in players with lots of potential. Someone wasn't getting the best out of them, this is clear by the 'regression' of some of the players who were good.

With the right coach we could get those players playing well.

If Arsenal had signed Zokora, BAE & Kaboul I bet they'd all be consistent, top level performers.

Commoli isn't getting sacked because he is the Director of football. He has done his job, reporting to the board regarding matters on the pitch, he has also done his job (the first thing he has really done) in sacking the manager. It is now his job to appoint a new manager that must deliver on the pitch. If this one doesn't work we have to ask "is our DoF upto the job?"

Do try to remember that Jol was recommended by Arneson. It worked out pretty good, now Commoli has his turn.

it was clear there are differences between Dof & The manager ..

David Pleat - Glenn Hoddle
Frank Arnesen - Jaques Santini
Damien Comolli - Martin Jol

and no one get his own signings ..

the point here .. who to judge these managers while they didn't get their own players ? and why only the managers are sacked and not DoF ?

if Comolli is doing good job with his scouting network .. why not to work as Scouting cheif ? why the DoF is working above the manager and he can sack him !

You're questioned MJ abilities .. ok, Who was our DoF before season 2005-2006 when challenged for top 4 ? how much we paid for them ? and who was our Manager ? how we finished 5th and just 1 or 2 points behind Arsenal ?

I felt we did well that season off the back of Arnesen signings, Carrick, Lennon and Mido especially.

But what happened to these players? Jol did something drastically wrong with the latter two, and obviously we all know what happened with Carrick.

I think Jol is a decent coach, I just don't think he's experienced enough to consistently get the best out of some of our players with bags of potential.

What happened to Dawson, Lennon, Mido, Defoe and now Bent? some bad management of players, for me.

Over the last 2 years I would say most people would agree that MJ has done a good job in getting us in to the 5th place position, but lets look on last season when we didnt have the best of starts also. Know it has happened again this season and things look like going from bad to worse it's easy for everyone to jump on the band wagon and blame anyone that they can think of. Imho we have looked shaky at the back which either comes down to the players on the field or the coaching they are being given. Last season the players dug themselves out of a hole from the poor start we had and went on to do well. With JJ and zakora in the middle of the park we dont have great protection in front of the CB position, and neither of them have played particularly well for me. Daws will be a great CB given a few more seasons and so will Kaboul (when he realises that he is a defender and should stop pissing around with the ball in our own box) Hopefully ledley will bring some leadership to the defence when hes fit. I hope the manager (whoever that maybe) comes in and gets rid of fringe players like rocha, ghaly and possibly either zakora or JJ, then bring in an experienced CB and a top class CM if we can get one. The left side isnt to much of a problem as I feel bale will do a good job there. I fell that no one was to blame particularly but it wasnt going our way and we dont have the top class players anywhere else on the field other than the strikers to get us out of this mess and everyone knew it. If there is any blame then we should look at the fact we didnt spend the money on a top CB (as defending wasn't our strong point last season either) or replaced carrick (huge loss) when thats all we needed.

You see by your logic Levy is actually the man who should be sacked no matter who makes the mistakes. There is a structure at the club and the First team coach is below a DoF. The DoF is below Levy (the CEO).

If if helps think of it as a food chain:

Levy at the top - Commoli next - Manager next.

So when the manager gets fired, the DoF replaces him. He can do this a couple of times Before The CEO says "Hold on just one second- all these managers can't be shit" and the DoF gets the boot. The CEO can only get the boot after say 3 or four DoFs have fucked up. It's all about scapegoating.

By your theory you are saying: Manager failed therefore DoF failed. May as well take that one step further and sack Levy since he appointed Commoli. However, if you agree with that, where does it stop? If a member of staff in the club shop nicks something, do they sack the store manager, and the Marketing Director, and the Finance Director and then Levy? I don't think things should work like that, do you?

Ramos is Comoli's man.

I seriously doubt that. I think Ramos is Levy's man in the same way Santini was. Also, according to reports in Spain (according to totoner), Ramos is to be in charge of 1st team recruitment. I don't actually see a great deal of similarity between the players Comolli has brought to the club and those Ramos has been successful with. Personally i'd liked to have seen Comolli be given the chance to bring in his own coach, but i don't think that is going to be the case. Comolli is good friends with Puel and worked with with Baup at St Etienne. Both of these guys are title winning managers who have also taken less fashionable clubs (Lille and Toulouse) into the CL. They both come form the same sort of football culture as Comolli and know they work well with Comolli. I'd be amazed if Comolli picked Ramos over either of those 2. Ramos is a coach that likes to use technical Latin players, whilst Comolli, in 2 years as a Sporting director at St Etienne, didn't sign a single player that wasn't from or who's family didn't originate from the French colonies in Africa. Of his 1st team signings from abroad for us, I think only Berbatov and Rocha don't come from Africa. These are very typical traits of a French coach/scout/sporting director. Of Ramos current squad 16 are from Latin countries and it is very evident in the way they play. Toulouse on the other hand have 11 players who either come from or originate from French African colonies.

But it's Comolli's job to convince Levy and the board that a squad of youngsters is a stupid idea. That is why Directors of Football sit on the board - to explain football matters to business man that obviously know very little about the sport.

If Comolli and Jol were both saying we need Petrov and/or Chivu then Levy wouldn't have been able to do his usual thing of sticking his fingers in his ears shouting 'I'm not listening'.

I'm sure Comolli and Jol agreed on lots of players, but Levy will stick to his business plan. You think Levy never said no to a player Jol and Comolli both wanted!?

And as for a squad of youngsters being a stupid idea...We did perfectly fine with same crop last year, and now they're a year older and more experienced. It wasn't a problem last season. But, this year, when we're playing like dirt, it's one of the myriad of problems that has miraculously surfaced. Plenty of people are all too happy to give all the plaudits to MJ when things are going well, but when they fall apart it's everyone and everything around him that's wrong.

The title 'Director of Football' begs the question concerning what direction? Levy wasn't born yesterday and i struggle to believe that he has attributed the current decline as purely a coaching issue. Or that he views the source of the problems as a sudden event. Comolli's role, in part, must have incuded identification of shortfalls, and to some extent addressing them. Retrospectively, hardly a glowing report card.

All I can see coming is tension between Comolli and Ramos. Enhanced by the possibility that Ramos in passing a rule over the squad, training and recruitment, draws attention to an apparent lack of proactivity from the director.

Would it surprise anyone, apart from Comolli, that Rodriguez was/is part of the Ramos package?

Purely on the economics of compensation....Comolli's departure will/would be substantially cheaper than that of a digruntled Ramos.
