Why would we need Kanoute?

With all the speculation going on and on and on about Kanoute returning to the Lane, I can't keep myself from thinking why would we need him?

The only answer is if Berbatov were to leave. But again that's all a load of speculation. What are the press trying to achieve by flogging this none-too-healthy horse of a story?

As good as Kanoute may or may not be, what place would he have at Spurs?

One of the reasons Kanoute has been so successful at Sevilla is that Ramos' team very much played to his strengths. Pacy counterattacking wingers stretching the play and putting in crosses. A fast striker, usually Luis Fabiano, playing ahead of him with Fredi playing a bit deeper linking the play with his fantastic technique. And Ramos clearly made Fredi feel wanted, one of Sevilla's main men. Result? Late in his career, when he seemed to have missed his chance at the big time, Kanoute responded with the best and most consistent football of his career.

At Spurs, Jol didn't trust him (esp after that semi-final handball), probably preferred Mido as his big striker. Result? Fredi frustrated us as often as he thrilled us.

I suspect in time Ramos will set up our team to play to Berbatov's strengths, which may involve him playing a bit deeper than the other striker. And I believe Berba will prove to be an even better striker than Kanoute in a Ramos team.

So, rather than pining for Fredi, I want Juande to work his magic with Berba, and get as much out of his game as he did with Kanoute.

The significant difference and one of the major tests that Ramos will face in the Premiership is the pace at which the game is played over here compared to Spain.

Ramos set Seville up to be a quick counter-attacking team that used width to stretch a stretched attacking team. But the pace of build up is still slower than in England and it doesn't factor in the headless 100% midfieldisms of the likes of Robbie Savage and Reo-Coker breathing on you all over the park - no hiding places.

His team over here will evolve from what we've been used to seeing under Martin Jol, that's for sure, and most probably with a different type of player but don't expect to see Seville Mk2 in North London.

Why would we need Kanoute? The short answer I think, is that we don't at the moment but where I to throw my hat in the ring, and probably get torn to pieces for it, I think he is a more technical and intelligent striker than Defoe. He is getting on a bit now and probably be happier than JD with a few games on the bench behind the rest of the strikers.

We could probably make a pretty penny for Defoe, were my suggestion reality, but as is I think it is a media witch hunt on Spurs generally.

P.s. I don't want JD to go anywhere..
