Tottenham plot January swoop for £25m Wilfried Zaha as Palace star seeks exit

By Greg Stobart

EXCLUSIVE

Tottenham are considering a fresh move for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha in the January transfer window, Squawka understands.

Spurs had a £21 million bid for Zaha rejected in the summer but have continued to monitor the 24-year-old’s progress and have been impressed with his performances this season.

Zaha himself is keen on a move to Spurs having had his heart set on joining the club following a phone conversation with manager Mauricio Pochettino in August.

Palace refused to sell Zaha in the summer but the player believes he would thrive under Pochettino as he plans to take the next step in his career.

Spurs would have to pay at least £25m for Zaha, who is under contract until 2020, and club insiders believe they are unlikely to make any major signings in January due to the difficulty in signing players mid-season.

Pochettino would like to sign a direct winger and a young playmaker to strengthen a squad that has struggled in the final third this season, scoring 24 times in 15 Premier League matches.

The Argentine believes he could build on Zaha’s excellent form so far this season, with the winger scoring three goals and providing six assists in 14 Premier League matches in a struggling Palace side.

Zaha would also provide Premier League experience while his age means he fits in with chairman Daniel Levy’s policy of signing players who will not lose their value in the transfer market.

For his part, Zaha feels he is ready to move to a bigger club but will make any decision carefully having failed to make an impact at Manchester United after his £15m move from Palace to Old Trafford in 2013.

Zaha told Palace chairman Steve Parish that he wanted to join Tottenham in the summer and White Hart Lane remains his preferred destination if the clubs can agree a fee.

One potential complication in January is Zaha’s decision to switch his allegiance from England to the Ivory Coast national team, meaning he is expected to play in the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon in January.

After missing out on Zaha, Spurs signed 27-year-old Moussa Sissoko for £30m on transfer deadline day in the summer and sources say they are already regretting the decision to bring him to the club.

The Frenchman has largely been used as a substitute in recent weeks and has even been left out of Pochettino’s 18-man matchday squad on three occasions. There is no suggestion of a January transfer but the recruitment team are already looking to sign an alternative winger.

Certainly the sort of player we need (i.e. pacy with some actual footballing ability as well).

Not sure he's the best available for the money though.

If I had to put money on us getting either Barkley, Draxler, Bazoer, Isco or Zaha, I think Wilfried is by far the most likely. Draxler or Isco would be awesome though, if you're reading Mr Levy.

Not too excited with the thought of signing any player that goes to the ACN to be honest .
Missing potentially a month in January every other year does not help us, would Zaha reconsider this if we went in for him?
Would like to see this type of player arrive at Spurs though, actually would like to see Zaha arrive along with Barkley !!

Zaha is a good player, granted, but not a class player. He could come and up his game here though, that being said, and having the option to play GKN and Zaha on our wings would change our attacking dynamic entirely, would be good for Janssen as well!!

Undecided, but we could do worse...Sissoko for instance:')

I'd take him. Would normally be against the price but with the way the market is going 25m is the new 15m....

I'm all for signing Zaha. We should have signed him in the summer over some other players we bought.

With this and the Barkley rumour looks like we're going back to the tried and trusted young English talent with potential route
Zaha recently switched nationality to become eligible for the Ivory Coast. I know what you mean, but if the club are going to sign a player in January it would be better if he can play before mid-February this season..

True, I don't honestly think we'll go for him. Just interesting the links we're currently getting in the press.

We would have to be insane, it would be up there with paying £30 million for Sissoko.

I'm surprised that Europe's big clubs (regulars in the CL knockout stages, for instance) don't lean on UEFA to lobby UEFA's African counterparts to move the ACN to June/July every fourth year, at the same time as the Euros. That way the clubs wouldn't have to miss their African players for several weeks every other season. (Maybe Europe's big clubs have tried such a move in the past, but it wasn't publicised.)

Just can't see how this is more than a headline to fill space.

We won't spend £25m.

If they rejected £21m in the summer then they won't sell for only £4m more in the middle of the season.

Pretty sure they wanted £30m

We won't spend £30m

He's stepped up his game this season, been involved in 7 goals in his last 7 games (goals/assists). But is he just playing for a move?

I'd like him, would inject some nice raw pace into side and give an outlet to likes of Eriksen to pass too.
