Dembela for modric! Dempsey for VDV! - have we made progress ?? I don't think so - French GK, probably an upgrade on what we had, but not priority - sigg upgrade for Hudd? Vert upgrade for King? - overall not a brilliant window - Mout would have made the diff, but as per................we don't quite make it past the post....usual shit, man city sign 50/60m worth - Bennayoun and Carroll at west ham, huge upgrade to team for little money, would have taken both myself:-(
Loose, VDV, Modric, Rose, WTF
Keep (again) JJ, Bentley, etc
Bad window for me sorry

dembele is a great signing but personally I rather we never sold pienaar or VDV than buy Dempsey and he is the same type of player as sig, at least VDV was a playmaker as well

Sorry mate, gutted to see Modders and VDV leave, but anyone who thinks that Vertonghen, Lloris, Siggy, Dembele, Dempsey, and Ade is a bad window then they need a slap!

So you think that we have upgraded VDV and MODD in this window? siggy is upgrade for who?, dembele is upgrade for who, dempsey is upgrade for who? ADE we had last year on loan? Please supply the answers and slap accepted!

Lloris
Walker - Dawson - Vert - Esso
Dempsey? - Parker/siggy? - Dembele - Bale
Ada/Defoe/Dempsey

Have to say dont see how this works or where they fit in - I think it will take a while to see, and as usual we will be playing catch up - this all = not great season

The answer is one that has been supplied by many posters time and time again and is as plain as the fucking nose on your face if you actually paid attention. Modric was never going to be replaced directly, that would be an almost impossible task. What has changed is the entire way we play, a style that will play to the strengths of the players we have brought in. As for the players we have brought in, Dembele's pass completion rate was better than any of last year's Spurs squad, in fact he had the 6th best pass completion rate in the league. Sigurdsson has a better goals per minute ratio than VDV and he consistently played full 90 minute matches. You've answered your own question on Ade saying that we had him on loan...at least he can play against City for a start. As pointed out elsewhere, Dempsey was 4th on the football writers list last year, a tenacious, dogged, goalscoring player who can play in a number of positions (as can Dembele) - we have so many more options in the forward half of the pitch than we did last year.

If people had the stupidity to listen to JJ and Akqa spouting shit all summer about people like Falcao then thats their problem.

time will tell but my gut feeling is that we are weaker, less quality in the midfield and still no world class striker

Those guys didn't want to be here anymore, nothing you can do about that. I think we bought well compared to some of the options.

We are a very tough team to beat now, with dembele and dempsey we have proven great players in the epl. In terms of stats they are right up there at the top (just see how may points dempsey gets consistently in fantasy football). As for dembele, his stats are less visible because his strength is that he hardly ever lose position even in the final third because of his blend of strength, control, touch, and acceleration. They also both are hard workers (i know modric was too but less so for vdv), getting around the pitch with less desperation on their faces than modric and vdv (i also doubted their fitness even for modric)

Want to wait and see how it pans out on the pitch before making a judgement on this group of players? We may find that they are a group that is going to give us more than the sum of its parts. For example, Modric as great as he was really wasn't much of a defensive presence but now we have Dembele who alongside Sandro is going to make us stronger defensively and more athletic even if he isn't as good a player as Modric.

Dempsey is going to give us a genuine goal threat as a right forward which we didn't have before and having him attacking the back post and Ade also in the box will give us a significant aerial threat when Bale/Bae are whipping balls into the box.

We are going to play with a higher line and press to win the ball higher up the pitch and so a lot of the transition play that was provided by Modric may no longer be essential. In addition vertonghen bringing the ball out of defence will likely be a feature of our play this season, making up partly for the lack of midfielder doing it (and actually allowing our more attacking midfielders to be in positions where they can affect the game).

Just no point being negative before we've seen it.

It's as simple as that! We've bought players with PL experience (bar Lloris) and who knows if the rumours that LD will come in Jan will pan out. We might still work on the Mountinho for a Jan move too

I do wonder though if Clint Dempsey was a panic buy

Again I think he is a very good fit. He'll add goals from the right, is excellent in the air so will get into the box and attack balls coming from the left wing (something vdv couldn't do) and he'll work his ass off and track his man (something that despite his efforts vdv wasn't inclined to do).

Sorry buddy, I think my use of the term "panic buy" wasn't good.

What I meant is, do you think he's a player we scouted or looked at or even talked about at some point? or was it a last ditch thing seeing we couldn't get the players we were after?

I think he's a good player but would go that far to say he's a good fit. Having said that I'm basing this on our past/current formation

I don't think a player that can play 3 positions and scored over 20 goals in all comps last season can be classed as a panic buy...

I don't think he was ever a first choice solution and the last minute nature of it makes that obvious. I stick by him being a good fit though, he's a better right forward than anyone we had in our squad at the beginning of the window. You only need to see how blunt we were with Bale putting in some great balls v wba but Defoe and Lennon were never likely to get on the end of them. Ade and Dempsey and it is suddenly a potent route of attack.

I reckon our First XI is a lesser side compared to last year, but that we've added some much needed depth. I believe we'll benefit from this window in the long run.

This is Brads last year, so Lloris in to replace, long term GK 10 years minimum.

Luka was always going to leave so forget him, we were never going to keep him so dont feel bad about it.

VDV is the kick in the face but, although he is as real talent, he was injured quite a bit, never did 90mins .

We'll be fine, if not we'll probably get relegated and all kill ourselves
