I'm sure he's good at what he does but he won't stop sideways passing by the looks of it.

What is it with Poch who wants swashbuckling AMs with a double pivot of bruisers behind them? I don't think he properly understands the link between midfield and attack. We'll end up having the same old problems in front of packed defences. There's no one to tease, to probe, to keep things ticking over from deep.

All the top teams in the world have a world class number 6, we fucking need one not more ball winners. We have enough of those.

If this is our midfield signing i'm pretty worried in all honesty.

I am NOT a fan at all. Crikey. I pray it don’t happen.
Obviously I don't know anything but judging on Poch's preferences over the years in terms of midfield I reckon it's gonna happen.

He likes physical players, he's never fancied Onomah for that reason and even Winks has started going sideways. Poch just wants safe midfielders who pass it sideways for the sake of keeping possession. But what he doesn't understand is that this is no good against the press and it's no good against teams parking the bus who have ages to get their defence set and shut us out.

We need to get a player who will transition from midfield to attack quickly and accurately, to get Alli and Eriksen on the ball before opposition defences are set. That's where the unpredictability Poch is looking for would come from.

This is 1000% correct and hopefully this is all just of reporters making stuff up.

ITK has stated we are concerned about our movement but if we want to throw out another destroyer it doesn't matter who is out there moving. Will seriously question Poch's approach if this is what he wants.

I'd be concerned if the only 2 CM's we bring in to replace dembele are this guy and grealish. Don't matter how much potential they have, can't replace a experienced, high performing CM with 2 unknowns.

Honestly the one position we are fine in.
Agreed, people love to bitch about Dier on here but there aren't a ton of defensive midfielders in the world that are much better and have the passing range he has.

The Boca fans absolutely adore him and will be devastated if he leaves. What are you judging your opinion on? I’m assuming YouTube because it just drastically escalated from “reminds me of Palacios” to praying for divine intervention within an hour.

Neither are answers to the CM problem as Grealish is a 10. It sounds like it's gonna be the same as it's always been, a 4-2-3-1 with 2 pure DMs and all the creativity in front of them. I predict the same problems.

Even if the system changes to 4-3-3 we still lack a number 6 who can dictate from deep. All that will happen is opponents will target Dier, Wanyama/Barrios in that anchor position and they won't have the technical ability to beat the press. They are not technically as good as the likes of Matic, Kante and Fernandinho, Fabinho, Henderson etc.

I've argued with people saying a player like Martial is not a good use of our funds this summer but this genuinely would be IMO (edit: a poor use).

If we are indeed moving away from the double pivot then I think we aren't as desperate for the deep lying playmaker as some others (personally think Eriksen and Dele would be top class in a 3 behind some dynamic attackers).

Only way it makes any sense is if Wanyama's knee is knackered.

Reading a bunch of World Cup previews, many Colombians seem to be hoping he will make up the midfield duo for the WC with Carlos Sanchez. If he has a good tournament, he may seem like a steal.

I’m going to hold off on my judgement of him until I see him play in the tournament. I think it’s hard to predict how any player from a South American League may do in Europe by judging them on their club performances. Hopefully his cost being low means he won’t severely affect our transfer business (regardless of how he pans out).

Like pretty much everyone on this board, apart from our Argentine fans, the World Cup will be my first proper look at Barrios. But I suspect signing Barrios must mean there's a problem with Wanyama, either post-injury or a falling out with Poch.

That said, Poch must have spoken with Davinson Sanchez about how Barrios performed in training for Columbia, and about his character, to provide some inside info.

I note the "Guardian experts' guide" calls him probably the best player in the Argentine top flight this past season, and the description of his character suggests he'll have a real hunger and work ethic. We know that Poch values that South American mentality.

Raised in poverty in the hot and sweaty Caribbean port of Cartagena, young Wilmar used to take to the streets selling ice he’d wrapped in plastic bags. “I’d earn 100 pesos per bag (2p) which paid for my bus to training,” he says. To this day Barrios’ fragile frame is a nod to the struggles he once faced but what he lacks in stature he makes up for with a veracious, terrier-like presence. This season he’s probably been the best player in the Argentine league with several top European clubs sending scouts to check on his progress. He could be one to keep an eye on this summer, and rates his chances highly. “I dream every day about the World Cup,” he said in the build-up. “Every day I get excited, every day I prepare. I see myself as a revelation at the World Cup. You have to think big so that things happen as you want."

He looks like the CM version of Aurier... dives in regardless of whether he can get the ball or not... red card waiting to happen.

Hopefully the media reports are a load of twaddle.

Does sound like a good player but doesn’t sound like what we need while we have dier and Wanyama

This guy seems like he'd be a perfect fit in the base of a midfield 3, signing him might be a hint that we're shifting to that style of formation

Watching YouTube clips on this guy and to be honest the number of time he dives in to challenges is crazy many of them could be classed as two footed by refs in the Prem. Luckily for him he seems to time the tackles well. The Prem, however, is a completely different standard and can see him getting quite a few red cards if he carries on doing that, which would be a bit of a worry.
