This is a scout's report on him done pre-world cup :

I have watched Barrios a lot over the past couple of seasons and he has been developing into a key player for Boca. He operates mainly in the holding midfield role but rather than just being able to break up play - which he does very well - he also has great technical ability and skill on the ball.

A player with good balance and agility, he can float past players with a drop of the shoulder and astutely anticipates opponent movements.

Barrios is strongly suited to European football and I would be surprised if he stays in Argentina much longer. Colombia have a very strong midfield currently so it depends what approach they want to take into the group stages but I would expect Barrios to be involved.

Ed goes on to say they plan to offer him an improved wage with a promise to move this winter window and hope he opts to stay.

I suspect Poch's view will be this summer or not at all.

If we signed him during the January window, then he would effectively spend six months learning our "methods", like Lucas Moura, and not be in full contention until 2019-20.

He needs to convince me. At present I am not a fan. Very physical, non-stop. I question his technical abilities. I stand to be corrected.

He reminds me of a Palacios. Can’t remember how his name was spelt.
Thankfully MP is our manager and only his opinion matters, not yours/mine or anyone else. If MP wants him then thats good enough for me as he is the only one who needs convincing.....

I like the look of him after watching like 6 to 7 videos...(y)
Looks very tenacious, great engine. Argentina league is a rogue league with lot of rash bad tackles every part of the field. So, a defensive midfielder there has to have be equally tenacious. The rash tackles are gone out of PL. If he keeps his head (looks like he does indeed), he could be a great addition.

I have no idea about this lad but if Poch wants him im all for it.

But if we fail to sign a high quality CM this summer I won't be happy.

P.S. I was watching Phenmons, a doc on Skysports yesterday where they featured a number of German based youngsters including Goretzka and Max Meyer. They were talking to Goretzka about his decision to go to Munich and they had good offers from abroad too. Im in no doubt we were in the running. Shame.
Sucks, Goretzka would have been absolutely perfect!

If Poch wants him, I'm all for it. Only downside would mean that it'd probably see the end of Wanyama who was a monster last season. Maybe we don't think he'll ever be the same after his injury

Surely just a Wanyama replacement? Would be shocked if Poch believe our squad lack a third DM. We probably even pocket some funds by selling Wanyama and replacing him with Barrios.

I had similar concerns about Wanyama before we signed him, as he'd got a couple of stupid red cards the season before he joined. But he was much more disciplined for us, and something Sandro-esque must have happened for us to be considering replacing a proven PL destroyer.
I was just gonna say this - look how much more disciplined Wanyama has been under Poch, than when not.

*If* it's true that Poch specifically wants this guy, then that's good enough for me. I would imagine he knows a thing or two about the Argentinian Leagues.

For some reason (because he rates Paulinho) - Vickery is sneered at on here, even though he knows far more about South American football than any of us
Interestingly more as Paulinho has proven to be a capable player. He was even starting to appear settled before that Charlie Adam challenge. The fact is that the AVB project failed, and Paulinho was just a part of that. I think it’s unfair to judge his ability as a player because of it.

And I see a lot of Casemiro in him.. Optimistic. (y)

From looking at loads of clips, the guys a machine. Very pacey for his position too which is a huge bonus. He looks a bit dodgy on the ball though but his tackling/interceptions look top draw.

Neither are answers to the CM problem as Grealish is a 10. It sounds like it's gonna be the same as it's always been, a 4-2-3-1 with 2 pure DMs and all the creativity in front of them. I predict the same problems.

Even if the system changes to 4-3-3 we still lack a number 6 who can dictate from deep. All that will happen is opponents will target Dier, Wanyama/Barrios in that anchor position and they won't have the technical ability to beat the press. They are not technically as good as the likes of Matic, Kante and Fernandinho, Fabinho, Henderson etc.
1) Grealish did not play as a 10 this season. He played as a CM in a midfield 3.

2) Kante is a phenomenal player. But no way is he better technically than Dier.

The Colombian connection is big too.

Poch has talked about how difficult it is for a young South American player to adapt both to football in the PL and life in Europe. But Davinson Sanchez has just made a similar journey, and could help Barrios here. As could Lamela and Foyth. When we signed Ardiles, Ricky Villa was of course a non-negotiable part of the deal.

Also Poch must have asked Davinson about Barrios' level in Colombian WC training, and how professional his attitude is. This wouldn't be conclusive, but I'm sure it's a factor alongside our scouting reports and what Poch's network in Argentina is telling him.

But what he doesn't understand is that this is no good against the press and it's no good against teams parking the bus who have ages to get their defence set and shut us out.

Do you honestly think there’s something that our manager, who has lead us to the three consecutive top three finishes, doesn’t “understand” about the team he’s been managing/coaching every day for 4 years that you do from watching them once a week?
