For me even if we have both Dier and Vick playing straightly DM, which Dier won’t be, what’s the big deal to have another, by the sound of it a very different kind of DM?

We are one of the biggest team in the league, and from time to time when playing against fast nimble players like Hazard/Aguero we like many other teams, will have a hard time dealing with them. If Barrios is a good manmarker, which I have no idea if he is or not, then it will be a welcome addition for me. Not to mention if he costs under 20M.

Looking at some of the video clips of him on youtube. Is it just me or is there a striking resemblance between him and Sandro?

Watching the clips he looks like a magic wand player
As in poch will need one to cut out all the basic errors and poor decision making.
He looks a tad erratic.

A clear run at a South American target?....no Italian interest?....no 3rd party ownership complications?.....uhmn very unlike Spurs!

Have you seen Dier and Sissoko's first touch? Never mind Alli's ball control at times.

We're hardly Barcelona and that's not what Pochettino wants, he wants a mix of pace, power and technique.

This is my point. Success now for me is taking us to the next level, you’ve named two players we need to upgrade on for that. A player who has questionable technique isn’t going to do that.

Players aren’t defined in to just one of them 3 categories you know ?

We were forced to abandon the back 3 last year with Toby and Vic’s injuries. Poch wants 2 ball playing CBs left and right and I think has always viewed Dier as the replacement for Toby.

I think this signing will see Dier moved to CB permanently.

I think he could definitely play as a more box to box midfielder (which we need), rather than an out and out DM. From his YouTube vids we can see he is quick, hard to get off the ball, quick to move the ball on and wins the ball high up the pitch. There isn’t a lot not to like.

I watched this video last night...he's number 14, if anyone's in any doubt. I prefer this type of video rather than the cherry picked content variants. It is, I admit, from 2016.

This clearly doesn't fit our requirements. We have Dier and Wanyama in this position already. What's the bloody point?

We need attacking minded CMs like kovacic, Ndombele etc., not defensive midfielders. In addition to this, if we are selling Toby and then moving Dier back there then our team is significantly weaker. Dier is far better at CM than CB and in any case, Toby is much better than him at CB. This is needless.

Dembele is obviously going, so that leaves Winks, Dier and Wanyama in that area of the pitch.

Pochettino has made it quite clear in the past that he likes/wants a player that can turn defence into attack, which is why he likes Sissoko - despite him appearing to be crap, and having the first touch of Lennie Small, he has a physicality that sort of allows this (which is one of the reasons why I'm surprised that Sissoko plays in a position he's obviously technically not suited to).

Dier is good, but to be realistic - he sits in front of the CBs winning the ball back and playing it forwards - he lacks pretty much every characteristic that Dembele has. With that in mind, it doesn't surprise me that Poch might want someone to offer some competition to Wanyama that otherwise doesn't exist.

We have a gaping hole in a Scott Parker type shape that will be even more obvious if/when Toby leaves imo.

This is a scout's report on him done pre-world cup :

I have watched Barrios a lot over the past couple of seasons and he has been developing into a key player for Boca. He operates mainly in the holding midfield role but rather than just being able to break up play - which he does very well - he also has great technical ability and skill on the ball.

A player with good balance and agility, he can float past players with a drop of the shoulder and astutely anticipates opponent movements.

Barrios is strongly suited to European football and I would be surprised if he stays in Argentina much longer. Colombia have a very strong midfield currently so it depends what approach they want to take into the group stages but I would expect Barrios to be involved.

In the bits I've watched of him since we've been linked, he has a burst of acceleration through the middle and decent control of the ball when running at pace, and he seems to decide what he's going to do with it quickly too. I have no idea if he's good enough, or if we even want him, but it seems that at least he's a progressive player. People have these weird notions that just because a player is aggressive and a hard tackler, he can't offer attacking qualities too. I don't get it.

Now it all makes sense, looking for value again rather than for a player that best fits our footballing requirements.

Yup, blast us for making always looking for value in inexpensive bottom of the barrel players like Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dier, Wanyama, Dembele, Eriksen and Dele. A player costing less definitely means he will not be good enough.

It was obvious with all those players where they were going to fit into the team. Please tell me for footballing reasons why do we need Barrios? Would we be after him if his price tag was £40m?

I think we place too much emphasis on a player's value. Obviously we do take into account how they're going to fit into the team but compared to other teams I think we're more opportunists and it doesn't always result in balanced squads. We've seen that over the years.
