Personally I don't think we need another midfielder who is predominantly defensive. We already have Big Vic and Dier so I'd much rather us get a CM who can use the ball well to push us forward. Nothing I have seen of Barrios suggests he is that type of player, and as such I would definitely give this one a swerve.

Agreed. If we’re genuinely interested in Barrios I can only guess that either Dier is moving to CB or Wanyama is crocked.

I really hope Dier will not be moved to CB. Everytime he plays there im a nervous wreck, always a misstake around the corner and no one behind to help. Maybe it would be sorted out if he gets more playing time in that position but im not sure.

Yeah I’m not sure about him at CB either. Better in a 3 man central defence than a 2 IMO.

He has a bit of arrogance in his style of playing that sometimes can be frustrating and sometimes brilliant. For example that he volunteered to shoot the last penalty and put it in the net, that was brilliant. But sometimes he gets a bit lost in his defence because of that I think. Theres much more room for that kind of playing style in the midfield, he dares to do things that a CB never should do.

The one thing I noticed, was Barrios does appear to be a bit sloppy with his passing under pressure, against England he did send a few fairly simple passes straight to an England player. However, you can't ignore the sheer tenacity and dynamism he brings to protecting the defence, like an on form Wanyama, who's that bit more agile than Dier.
Currently Dier and Wanyama gives us two quality options, but if we're struggling to identify a genuine high calibre replacement for Alderweireld, I definitely wouldn't be against bringing in Barrios to understudy Wanyama, with Dier dropping back to Central Defence.
I suspect we will move towards a 3 man midfield, having a destroyer sit deep, and then two more attacking options sitting either side, so the DM's passing doesn't have to be so progressive.

Come on lads, stop arrogantly dismissing him when you’ve only seen glimpses of him at the World Cup (where he’s actually been very good).

I can only imagine the sneering that would have occurred if we’d been linked with Kante when Leicester signed him.

Barrios is absolutely adored by Boca fans.

Really doesn't want to go away this rumour, plus the release clause is pure Levy.

It's the kind of transfer that I can see someone like Roma nipping in and making however. A bit like Cengiz Under who was strongly linked in reports abroad early on last summer.

I don't think the outlay on this guy would effect anything we are looking to do in terms of bring in a more forward thinking midfielder.

No but it affects the numbers of players in the squad for 2 CM spots. How many DM's does one team need exactly? We need creativity because we have very little from the middle of the park, not yet another destroyer. Don't forget there is a maximum number of foreign players a team can register each season.

If true, I wonder if the lower cost options in Barrios and Grealish have freed up enough budget for us to pursue Pulisic whilst not closing the door on the Martial situation. Whilst I really want a Dembele replacement that could well work if we are considering dropping Dele and Eriksen into a midfield 3.

Maybe Toby still goes and we want Dier as a back three option, with De Ligt being signed for the 19/20 season.

I'd consider that if we were planning on changing systems. I really like Dier at RCB. Do still worry a bit about him being first backup in a 2 however.

If there is one weakness you could pick out from our team it is this. If Eriksen isn’t dictating things then we have nothing else in terms of creating opportunities.

Unless Wanyama is finished and we are selling him ( which I hope is an early rumour that’s been put to bed) then I find it a bit depressing to be linked with this type of player.

We need footballers. We’ve never really replaced Modric, or even come close for that matter.

Another season from Wanyama with last years fitness level and we'll have no shot at the title again. Wouldn't surprise me if Poch doesn't want to risk it.

Dismiss Barrios due to a couple of games you've seen at the world cup? He's looked like Makelele compared to Dier.

Almost certainly one would have to leave or one move back into defence for this to happen imo.

For me, Dier’s best position is on the right of a back three. It’s where he’s played his best football for us in my opinion.

There seems to be too much smoke for this not to be somewhat true.
