There’s a lot of silly snobbery when it comes to players in the PL. For some reason if a player comes from Europe it always feels more exciting. Said to people 2 years ago about Arnautovic and got laughed at. Many had same response to Shaqiri this season. Have to admit I didn’t see it in Richarlison, ok they paid top dollar but wouldn’t surprise me if he is a £60m player in 2 years. Rice is definitely worth a look, not totally convinced though. But I think there’s lots of little gems in the PL go unspoken about because of snobbery.

After watching Richarlson against Arsenal I wouldn't want him here right now. He made the wrong decision 80% of the time. If that had been better along with his finishing then Everton would have won that game. We need a play who can already make the right decisions now but has the ability to kick on. Its why its so difficult for us to find the right players. (not saying no players in is good though obvs).

2 years ago Arnautovic wasn't playing like he is now, he was inconsistent and lazy. He's found his form now thanks to being played consistently and is the main threat which is something that wouldn't be happening now at Spurs, same with Shaqiuri, he is inconsistent and isn't better than our current options. Richarlison is the same, pointless buying him for £50m when we bought in Lucas for half of that.

There are some good players in the league but what we are after is upgrades on what we already have and in my mind there's far more players at cheaper prices in Europe than there is in the Prem.

trouble is we have to do something about our HG quota, the problem is there isn't many players that would qualify as HG out there that are good enough to be anything other than squad players

Won't have a HG issue if we get rid of Dembele, GKN, Sissoko, Llorente, Janssen, and a backup GK. That would free up all the spots we need.

Start using the youth team players, no point in buying in sub standard players just cos they’re home grown. Our youth team players may or may not end up good enough but I’d rather save the money

Absolutely- there is no point buying mediocre players who will barely feature when we can give that experience to some youth players. There should never be another window where we have to shift dross in order to buy badly needed players

The positive side of me would like to think that were we to have a quiet January window, that the money we save, combined with the money we set aside for the last TW would rollover to the next summer TW, adding to those funds. Meaning, we'd have a fairly sizable fortune to spend.

Sadly, I'm guessing the reality is different. In all likelihood, the money we didn't spend, went straight back into the stadium development.

I also don't think it's likely we'll have much money next summer either. Methinks the stadium costs are gonna be a bit of an albatross for some time. Glad to be proven wrong, mind you. Just lowering my expectations accordingly.

maybe the money we didn’t spend was not really there in the first place.

The difficulty appears to be in shifting unwanted players.

Janssen, GKN, to a lesser extent Llorente, Vorm - these could easily be replaced by English youth team players.

We could solve our HG issue, save money on wages and make our squad more flexible - the problem is getting rid of those unwanted guys in order to free those slots.

I think that the big fees and wages are making moving unwanted players (and re-signing wanted players) much more difficult.

Players have no incentive to move unless they keep their current wages and may be picky about where they go.

ALSO with transfer fees so high (even for average players), their is MASSIVE incentive for players to run down their contracts and cash in on big signing on fees. Toby and Eriksen are prominent examples, but dembele is also on this train I feel.

Even players we would like to shift can run down contracts and leave as free agents or use this possibility to only agree to a move if for example the selling club is required to pass on some or all of the buying clubs transfer fee payments to the player. This saves the selling club wages and puts them in no worse position on the fee than if the player ran down their contract. But the selling club gets less or no return on their initial purchase. With fees so high, the players have a big incentive to play hard ball like this. I would go this way if I were sissoko, maybe less so for Janssen who still may want to prove himself a player.

This all got me wondering whether the transfer fee bubble might start to deflate a bit if it becomes more common for players to aggressively refuse to leave or re-sign in order to get their hands on the transfer fee money. If fees aren't so readily recoverable, clubs will be reluctant to pay, and money ball may also be a bit compromised. Of course, clubs will still need players, but it will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years.

Anybody follow La Liga on here closely? Could Pablo Fornals play a more reserved role?

If you haven't seen his goal from yesterday I suggest you look it up.

Agree. straight away we could replace GKN with Edwards end of season. That would add to our home grown and club trained quota for CL. I think we can sell Janssen and Llorente and replace them with one player. We don’t really need 3 forwards as we only play 1 up top and we know Son can do a job there when needed. And a decent 3rd choice English keeper shouldn’t be hard to find if we don’t think we have a 3rd choice in our youth set up.

why do you keep including Dembele, a fist-team regular who I can assure you the fans in the stadium feel reassured by, in with that lot every time? You really need to go to a match, to feel the assured vibe of the fans when he's on the pitch.

Cause his spot is the most clear position we need to upgrade. From everything we heard we were entertaining offers from him this summer and he'll be off for a free next summer.

I'm not saying he's bad like the rest of those guys, just that its time to move on from him.

Who was the highly rated striker kid we sold this summer? As far as I remember he left because he felt his path to the first team was blocked - surely he could've been promoted ahead of Janssen if we have absolutely no intention of ever using the Dutchman?

Hope people won't mind if we post who we don't want in here as well.

Ismaila Sarr - pass. NOT a baller. Worse than Nkoudou.

No thanks.
