I think in the past we've done better in the transfer market

Like dtx says, we haven't been that great in recent years

These things go in cycles and perhaps it's time to freshen up the scouting and recruitment staff?
I think it gets harder as our team improves.

I am concerned about our current setup.

I know there was talk of Poch wanting more control.

Things aren’t bad but there is always room for improvement.

At the moment we seem to buying players in their early 20s then discarding them when not a success straightaway.

So we are either buying players not of the quality or potential required or we are not bringing them through properly.

I believe it is mostly the former.

I don't even think its scouting, we've been linked and had ITK to good players on decent pricing... Under, Barkley, Maddison, Batshuayi, Mane, Wijnaldum, Berge last summer, Malcom, etc. Its the execution that has been lacking.

I think our UK based scouting is good, I think our European and Americas scouting leaves a lot to be desired.

It's the fact that there have been so many good HG players available over the last few years and we've not managed to get any of them, which is frustrating.

Obviously there are always individual circumstances that will hinder a deal, but you'd think that we'd be successful in at least 1 of them!

When have we done better?

Arguably the last 4 years have brought together the nucleus of a club that is a constant CL challenger. I don't recall those teams in the past.

Its easy to spot some great players who have been brought in over the years - but you can't just count the good transfers without discounting the duds. In aggregate, it would be tough to find a better 4 (or 5) year period than what we are seeing right now.

Was signed in Feb 2015; soon that'll be 4 years ago

Didn't play for us for another 6 months though, so 3 years really. It makes no odds though - we need home grown players but Levy won't pay the price for anyone who could push for a starting spot. I'm not sure who's out there that ticks any boxes tbh. We're in an odd situation where anyone who is good enough for us thinks they can get double the salary at any of our rivals.

I think we are very much in a situation were if we want to improve the squad and really try to win something we need to pay the sort of money that Levy will not pay. Theres isn't much more to it then that. Buying young prospects is great but we will be in a perpetual stasis with our best players wanting to leave when they reach a certain age in order to win things as the youth slowly develop into players that are capable of winning things.

But this only matters if we want to win the PL. As it stands I can see us staying in the top four/five for years to come but not winning it, unless the other big teams stop spending money or all fuck up again which I can't see happening for a while. I think this is kind a moot point now anyway as I think our team will look very different at the start of next season. I for one will be very surprised if Eriksen and Toby are still here.

Two of our top 3 players.

ParisUnited reporting Tuchel and Wenger met regarding his potential move as their sporting director and discussed bringing Ndombele to PSG. I give us an approximately 1% chance of every bringing Ndombele to the club.

I guess thats different than the wages we use on Sissoko, Llorente, Nkoudou, Janssen? None of whom we really use anymore. He would have been on the books for like 6 months when he was unavailable, boo hoo we don't get an England international for 6 months when he's 24. I think we would have survived. Levy's excuse making has really rubbed off on some of you.

Imagine how much better this team would look if you replaced Sissoko with Barkley.
The point is no-one knew how long it was going take, or if he could get back. For someone who was asking for 100k plus a week it was a real risk. The likes of Janssen and Nkoudou were punts on small wages and we still can’t get rid.

Really, this is the epitome of flavour of the week stuff here. I head nobody crying about Barkley up until a week or two ago.

I wanted Barkley last summer, and was adamant we should have done it January as well.

I was just saying how we have plenty of wages just sitting on our bench. Barkley would be more useful than all of them combined.

That's fine coming from yourself who, I assume, is not a professional scout or recruitment manager, but that should not cut it as an excuse at a top-flight football club. Especially, since everyone involved will be on high 5 figure, or even 6 figure salaries.

This isn't a go at you personally, so don't take it as such, but the lack of vision and drive for excellence that some fans on here have shown since the summer transfer window opened, is staggering.

To put it in context, our turnover as a club is around £300 million p/a. How many companies of that size in the UK (or world) would be happy to bumble along with an HR team who can't spot, or attract, the required talent needed to drive revenue, profit and success?

There weren't ANY transfers this summer!! The whole thing reeks of 'amateur-hour'.

Unfortunately the sales were the most important part of our transfer business and for whatever reason that just never came to fruition.

EXACTLY.

Why did we waste money on blah blah blah when we could have signed this other fella?

Well the players we have signed were all highly rated at a point, we aren't deliberately buying a load of shit. Barkley, to point out one particular name, was broken and had been shite for two years. A handful of starts in 12 months for Chelsea and his name pops up again.

Theres a lot of experts after the event regarding Llorente, Janssen and Nkoudou...most of which had positive receptions when they signed ( or at least intrigue). Not every transfer works.

Yes, we could get more of a sure thing by combining the money to one bigger transfer. But that doesn't explain the potential Barkley punt.
