Watching the England game last night, his quality was clearly evident for all to see. A monumental cock up on our clubs (Poch/Levy) part. Even at a combined £ 22 million it would have still been a sound deal.

Still should have done it.

Also, Barkley was coming off that grade 3 hamstring tear, which are severe. For a player who relies on his athleticism & guile, having such a injury increases the likely hood that it could rupture again. Add in Poch's grueling sessions and you have recipe for a long injury layoff. *EDIT* I wish we had signed him pre-injury and post contract expiration as he was always the ideal Dembele replacement.

Everyone is an expert in hindsight.

No one knew what would happen with Barkley's injury, and he's only just returned to action. No point getting upset we didn't sign him, it was a huge risk.

That's fine coming from yourself who, I assume, is not a professional scout or recruitment manager, but that should not cut it as an excuse at a top-flight football club. Especially, since everyone involved will be on high 5 figure, or even 6 figure salaries.

This isn't a go at you personally, so don't take it as such, but the lack of vision and drive for excellence that some fans on here have shown since the summer transfer window opened, is staggering.

To put it in context, our turnover as a club is around £300 million p/a. How many companies of that size in the UK (or world) would be happy to bumble along with an HR team who can't spot, or attract, the required talent needed to drive revenue, profit and success?

There weren't ANY transfers this summer!! The whole thing reeks of 'amateur-hour'.
Our turnover is inconsequential when there are teams willing to spend much more than we can afford on our primary targets.

Really, as much as I was unhappy we didn’t strengthen last summer, I’d much rather have bought no-one than wasted £40m-£50m on risky punts.

We’ve got a whole year to plan now - a bunch on big wage players out of contract next summer, or likely to go - Dembele, Toby, Llorente - so there’s no excuse not to restructure then. Once I can understand, twice would be unacceptable.

Then we need to rethink who our primary targets will be

Agree with the rest of what you say though

I wanted Barkley last summer, and was adamant we should have done it January as well.

I was just saying how we have plenty of wages just sitting on our bench. Barkley would be more useful than all of them combined.

You sound convinced Chel$ki would've dealt with us, which is pretty hard to believe.

We're in a very tough spot at the moment, primarily due to the spiralling cost of the stadium. We were told that transfer spending wouldn't be affected by the stadium construction and I assume that was originally true, but the goalposts have moved and there's a huge amount of money to be found from somewhere. We couldn't shift any of the players we were willing to let go either and I see that as other teams either not wanting them at all, or not wanting to pay what Levy wants. We also have a shortage of home grown players who would attract premium prices. Overall, I can't say I'm surprised at the lack of transfer activity even though as a fan it's hugely disappointing. It may seem like 'amateur hour' to you but to me it looks more like a business strapped for cash in the short term.

I guess thats different than the wages we use on Sissoko, Llorente, Nkoudou, Janssen? None of whom we really use anymore. He would have been on the books for like 6 months when he was unavailable, boo hoo we don't get an England international for 6 months when he's 24. I think we would have survived. Levy's excuse making has really rubbed off on some of you.

Imagine how much better this team would look if you replaced Sissoko with Barkley.

Exactly. We signed Malbranque while he was "injured" and he didn't play for us for a good few months.

It's actually getting ridiculous now, we should have taken a risk on a player who had a long term hamstring injury, really fucking hell how desperate are some of you. 3 of our current midfielders are at potential risk of being out with long term injuries if they are pushed too hard, so what people are saying is that they are happy with 4 midfielders with potential of breaking down, what is up with that?! :ROFLMAO:

It's not as if Barkley was playing well or playing at all at the time, the only reason people are bringing it up now is because he's worked his way back to fitness and seemingly looks sharpe, let's just wait a few months before we start declaring him Xavi elect shall we. those hamstring tears are not a joke and there's always a risk of it pinging again. There's just a gaping hole in our midfield which needs to be addressed and people are literally throwing out names without any rationale thinking whatsoever.

Yeah, not sure why you quoted me and wrote all that. I'm the only who brought up the reason's we didn't ( agent fee & injury) and shouldn't ( type of injury) have signed Barkley. To clarify, I wish we had signed him pre-injury and post contract expiration as he was always the ideal Dembele replacement.

I don't understand where this is some big act of revisionism. Its a player a lot of us liked and wanted before he moved to Chelsea and we were heavily linked with. Its not like saying, dammit why didn't we sign Pogba.
