Nope, he’s very much a CM b2b. Fantastic at recovering the ball, transitioning the ball, creating chances. The one thing he lacks is he doesn’t score, he works tirelessly but he vary rarely hits the back of the net. Bellow is an extract from a recent Goal article that gives some stats from last season...

No outfield player in Serie A has made more recoveries than Barella this season (72), while only five players have won more tackles than him (16). Only one midfielder has made more interceptions, while he ranks fourth in terms of duels won.

However, there is more to his game than tenacious tackling and a relentless pursuit of possession. Barella is also both talented and brave on the ball.

At just 21, he has already developed into a leader at Cagliari, a player willing to take charge of the game. Only six midfielders in all of Serie A have had more touches than he this season (557), which only serves to underline his importance to the Cagliari side, while his long, raking, right-footed passes are a feature of every game the Sardinians play.

He is willing to take players on too. He has completed more dribbles (8) than wingers Douglas Costa and Ivan Perisic (6), while he has created more chances (12) than the likes of Radja Nainggolan (9) and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (9).
I don’t think it really matters if he scores that much playing in the midfield two of a 4231. Dier, Wanyama, Dembele hardly ever do. The likes of Kante, Jorginho, Fernandinho don’t either. Even De Bruyne’s goal scoring went down dramatically when Pep moved him back to a deeper position.

Seen from a very shady source that Paredes would be available for €30 mill. As he's desperate to get out of Russia. Would be fantastic business.

I agree, I just felt like I should mention something negative about him to balance it out.

How’s he doing at Zenit? Must say, once he left Roma he completely dropped off my radar.

Interesting, thank you. Icwe recently read that he (Mata) could be Gooner bound in the summer, on a free. I'd not be happy with that.

Trouble is Levy and Poch don’t usually sign players in their 30’s. Think Llorente was a one off, and only for emergency cover. Would Mata be able to do the high press which I expect to return when we either move back home, or next season when all our players will of had a summer break, and hopefully an injury free preseason

Some seems to be obsessed with finding an exact carbon copy of Dembele when looking for a CM replacement. Dembele is a fantastic player in his own right, no doubt about that. But he's also not a very good passer, nor does he offer much creativity or goal threat. Let's be honest: if Dembele had the three above traits he wouldn't play at Spurs. It just does my head in when I see people dismissing young promising CM's with: "He can't replace Dembele he isn't a good enough dribbler".

We've struggled against tight defences for several seasons now and the chief problem in my opinion is that our build up play is to slow and ponderous. The City side that ran away with the league last season didn't have a "Dembele"-type in the middle, nor did the Real Madrid side that has won the CL three years in a row.

I'm aware that we can't fully replicate how other teams play for a number of reasons and that Pochettino seem to prefer two CMD's in the middle but if we're not looking for other types of CM's we won't progress as I see it.

As much as a Dembele type of player is a massive plus - there aren't many about and as you've noted, one of our shortcomings in certain games has been a lack of tempo from deep, which dribbling does little to rectify.

I agree with your thoughts - ultimately a player with decent technique and a great range of passing is more important for me than replicating MD's skillset. I'd like to add that and replace Dembele longer term but one thing at a time.

Only 6 weeks to the madness can’t wait. Will be best January ever in terms of links and speculation. Given the Summer people will presume we must do business.

I'd be shocked if our January is dramatically different than the summer. A couple target players we'll try and work a deal for but aren't going to pay what the club thinks (note: club, not fans) is more than "good" value.

Teams generally aren't going to part with their best players in January. We still have a load of non-homegrown players we need to offload to make room. Despite our moans the club's priority is the new stadium and resources will be focused there. I wager what that ultimately means in terms of CL, player contracts, Poch, etc will play out the remainder of the season and into the summer with a lot of crossed fingers, some dice rolls by Levy and co, and who knows what random other uncontrollable items pop up.
