Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate is targeting Champions League qualification next year after finishing the current campaign with a flourish.

Spurs are still in the hunt for a Europa League place this season and Woodgate wants to continue their recent good form after the summer, echoing the sentiments of boss Harry Redknapp.

Redknapp wants to emulate the likes of Everton, who they face this weekend, by at least challenging for a top-four place in the Barclays Premier League even if they do not break through.

"I want to finish as far as we can up the league," Woodgate said. "The aim is always to get in the top four and the Champions League.

"We'll see how we do. It's going to be a better team next year, you can see how the team has changed under the manager we have now.

"Robbie (Keane) and Jermain (Defoe) have been good acquisitions for the squad, along with Wilson Palacios, who has been brilliant for us.

"It's taking shape in the training ground and we are starting to do it on a Saturday."

Spurs have been helped by Woodgate's partnership with Ledley King in defence.

They have conceded just nine goals in 18 home games and could beat their record of 11 during the 1919-20 season.

"The defence is unbelievable," said goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes on Spurs TV Online. "They play very well all the time, they help us so much for our clean sheets.

"It is the best defence I have played in, they understand the game so much and that is important for us."

As long as they avoid a big defeat to Manchester City in their final home game, Spurs look likely to set a new club and Premier League record.

"I think we can do it," Gomes added. "Before I came here I wasn't looking for the record, I looked just for the team and winning games. Now we have a chance for the record, it's amazing."

Talking about the "big 4", wasn't it hilarious to see Chelsea fall in such a manor yesterday. I think it says lot just how accostomed they are to having decisions go their way, that when a few don't they go mental and claim conspircy. Barca had a player who (blatently) didn't deserve to get sent off - FFS!

Yet, when their is a genuine conspiracy, as with the refs and manure, clubs seem to act with nothing more than a casual acceptence...does the conspiracy run deeper than we may have even suspected??

Will it be a Premier League record? I thought it was just a club record.

    3rd or higher
  4. lishiyo
ah, let's not talk about top 4 for a while please :) let's just focus on winning at goodison
  5. jamieee
I believe it will be OUR Premier League record ( which I think is something like 16 goals in Premier League) and not a Premier League record.

Shakhtar Donetsk, the team that knocked us out of the UEFA Cup, have just got to the final.

not talk about aiming for top 4 next season again!!!!

im sure the last 2 seasons jenas has said something similar and look at the starts we have made.

i know we need ambition, but maybe we should target a good start to the season, carrying on from this one and see where it takes us

You know 'MAXI', this is not a Chelsea website but I have to comment on at least part of your post regarding that club. I can only assume by your "wasn't it hilarious to see Chelsea fall" comment the you would rather see Barcelona...a Spanish club, in the C.L. final than Chelsea, an English (and fellow-London) club??
I personally have problems with that position, (not that you don't have that right of course), but I do try to support - after Spurs - English clubs, especially those who help the National Team by playing English-players. Maybe in this age of buying and selling allegiances from everywhere, supporting one's country's clubs and players is just a little quaint eh?

    Aah! What might have been.....

You're one of the last. The media tries to make you believe that in Europe most people support their nations club sides, but in reality I don't know many people who actually do.
I want Spurs to be the first London club to win the champs league so I can't wait for the scum and the blue scum to get eliminated. United disgust me, so I support everyone who play them, bar the two scummers. Liverpool, I don't actually mind, and they always seem to be involved in interesting games, but I digress. I only want Spurs to do well in Europe, everyone else can fuck off.

Well 'barry'....we are not really that different. If Chelsea had made the final I would have enjoyed seeing them beat Man.U. who, you also evidently mildly dislike!!
As for the England supporting; I live in Canada and when England are playing in a big event, it's always an excuse to get together for a few beers!

totally agree, I can't see any of the top 4 sides as genuinely English when so many of their players and plastic fans are from abroad, plus I'm more familiar with Chelsea being annoying so I can't see them in a positive light. I'd love for Spurs to be the first London club to win it though I can't see that happening (we can dream though ).

Not exactly on the actual thread topic, but since we are talking about Europe... if Spurs do not make it into the Europa League for next season, the management's dismissal of UEFA Cup this year at QF stage will look like a missed opportunity again. All we needed was to have Woodgate and Palacios (both of whom were far from overplayed at that stage) in the Shakhtar game away and very probably we could have been in the Final instead of them.

Werder are 10th in Bundesliga, Diego is suspended for the Final - and we would have had a great chance to win the UEFA Cup in the fine traditions of this club again...

every year we think we can get the top four, don't, but then think we can next year. on paper our players are good enough to challenge. liverpool won't have another year like they have this, and the scum get weaker and weaker. but we MUST find some consistency and start getting the results our performances have deserved from games like those at blackburn, WBA and sunderland. then we'll be getting somewhere.
i believe we COULD do it - but i know deep down that every year i think next year will be ours. and it could - but could easily not.

on an aside - i don't believe this stuff about supporting other english clubs in europe. i have nothing in common with newcastle or villa fans, and there are clubs in northern france, for example who are more local to me and teams all over europe who are better to watch. if it can't be spurs - i only want the best teams to watch in as long as possible - and don't care who wins. english or otherwise. oh, and not ar5ena1. ever. whether or not they're classed as "english". never.
  16. PantherX
I wish we could ban the words "top four' until we actually finish the season there. Maybe then we could focus on simply getting results one game at a time.
  17. frosteye
Im a bit in the middle.....obviously always want Spurs to win no matter what (goes without saying)

Im not a Man u hater....yeah they can be w@nkers at times but its usually refs that fcuk us over rather than the actual players/manager etc. Fergie always seems tp speak pretty well of us.

    Dont mind Liverpool either.

BUT I would never sit there and hope the Ar5e or Chelski win. Never. No way.

Only way I would is if one of them winning meant we won the league or something to that effect!

I like watching Man Utd, they have great players and play at such an entertaining tempo. People don't like thier arrogance but to be honest if Spurs were the most successful club side in the UK then we'd all be very arrogant also. It's just a matter of course, success breeds winners and a winning mentality. Now Chelsea on the other hand are full of nasty arrogance and the likes of Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Ballack etc have no class and are simply narrow minded thugs. So in terms of winning the CL i will always want Utd to win over any other team and then Liverpool and Arsenal.

I'm gutted we didn't put the extra effort in the UEFA cup, we lost to a poor team that have got to a final and will compete against another poor team for a cup - we should be there and building our own winning mentality. As for the now though, we need at least a draw against Everton (who i hope are resting players now they have their Europa place confirmed), a win against City will be tough and Liverpool unlikely so Europa is possibly a long shot

I'm the last man on Earth to defend chelsea, but they weere robbed in a manner that I've never seen before and I doubt will ever happen again.

4, that's right, FOUR legitimate penalty claims waved away.
Shocking refereeing. The Webb blunder was small potatoes next to this travesty.

I will be rooting for Barca all the way in the final, but they did not deserveto go through.

So the consipracy is against Chelsea not in their favour
