At times I feel he gets overshadowed a bit when he's got a living legend in KING alongside him. Like the Villa game they're both a text book on how to defend as centre backs.

We're so lucky to have Woody. Here's a reminder of how he can be so lethal when he needs to be. So good for our club and himself that he's not getting injured....and enjoying his football. He deserves to make the England squad soon.

Quality clip this is. Someone on here should make a "Woodgate at Spurs best of" clip.

But for now.....heres this one!!!! God bless you Woody!!! So glad we signed him!!!

For def. With no disrespect to Ledley, Woody should have been caled up to the England squad. There is no denying that Ledley is world-class, but his situation makes an England call-up risky. To England, and perhaps more importantly, to Ledley himself. Woodgate has all the qualities one needs in a centre-back and has them in spades. He should not be overlooked by Cappello again.

He's been as good a signing as any in recent years, a bit of a risk yes, but one that has paid of big time. Consistently rock solid at the back and not only compliments Ledley superbly, but has looked really good alongside Daws too.

He is simply a proper defender... Shearer (who is a cock) says he has never played with a centre back the quality of Woodgate and he played in squads with the likes Adams (who is also a cock)

Woodgate and king are the best CB pairing about at the moment, and glad to see woodgate gettign agood run, afew years back i thought he would never really have a full season or most of one with some of the injuries he used to pick up when at real and newcastle

Yiddo!!!!

My only question is why isn't Woody the captain?

He has to be the first name on the teamsheet (unlike Keano with a fit JD, Bent, Pav, +??)
Watching the pre-match huddle yesterday it was Woody doing the talking
He leads by example, not by flapping his arms and pointing where the pass should have landed

Watch the slo-mo of his CC final goal. He took the ball in the face, landed and his first instinct was to chase the ball into the net. Keano (sad to say) would have been on the deck appealing for a pen.

Woody is different gravy

He's good but no a patch on Ledley

Woodgate does make errors

Ledley is usually flawless

Props for this thread......Woody was awesome yesterday, he only got slightly caught out once when Martins smashed his shot over, besides that though he put his head on everything and has stayed consistent all season long. Wonderful player!

I also wanna throw in a word on Wilson yesterday cos he doesn't seem to be gettin much love in the ratings thread. Make no mistake about it, without him in the team we wouldn't have won so many 1-0's lately. His work rate was fantastic yesterday, played a wonderful pass into keane in the 1st half, had a few sloppy short passes but made up for them with numerous tackles in the midfield....I love this guy, he's our most important player IMO.

I couldn't help laugh yesterday during the Utd v Everton match, the commentator mentioned that Moyles believes Lescott and Jagielka are the 2nd best partnership behind Ferdinand and Vidic. No chance, Woodgate and King are on another level. Woodgate has been one of the biggest bargains we've made in the Premier League. He has been a top class signing and was worth the risk when we signed him. The loss of King is not so crucial with Woodgate in the side, and we went down to our 3rd backup centre back (with Corluka shifting over) yesterday, but it didn't really affect us. That wouldn't have happened before Woodgate arrived. We now have 2 top class centre backs and 2 very good ones to cover (although i prefer Corluka at right back, he is very good cover in the middle).

FFS, Jaglieka and Lescott are good but no way especially re King. He is in no one's class but Rio's for me.

I think there is more behind Woody not being selected for the England squad, for me he is one of the top defenders in the country. A player i never envisaged playing for us and it is only when you watch him play every week you see just how good he is. The tackle on Martins yesterday was top drawer, but according to Jonathan Pearce and Shearer, a definate penalty

No he doesn't, he is a terrific defender. He stopped us winning the CC. Vidic is excellent but is prone to mistakes (see Liverpool) and doesn't read the game as well as Ferdinand, he is more reactive.

Jags and Lescott are a great partnership, Everton have been difficult to break down all season.

Its not unwise to suggest they are a top partnership. My spurs bias says Ledley and Woody are a better partnership, but there's no a lot between them.

Very true. As a partnership Jagielka and Lescott are excellent and have been consistently good all season. I'm sure there are very few who would argue that individually they are better players than Ledley or Woodgate, but they have a very good understanding.

Having said that it just makes you wonder how good Ledley and Woodgate could be if they actually trained together. I wonder if they have ever worked properly as a defensive partnership in training or whether it is all just down to them being excellent instinctively.

Yeah I agree. Individually you'd have to say Woodgate and Ledley have better attributes than both Lescott and Jagielka, but as a partnership I wouldn't call it outrageous to say Lescott and Jagielka are up there with the best.

Don't forget they also have Phil Neville sitting doing a job in front of them. Until recently we have had a bit of a hole in front of the defence which has allowed them to be exposed.

Everton are so consistent with their team and are very well drilled and organised. Lescott and Jagielka as a partnership are definately right up there.

Lescott + Jagielka are definitely up there as a partnership, but they have the benefit of playing in a very settled squad and constantly training together whereas poor ledley can't train and it was only very recently that we finally played the same starting 11 twice in a row (plus a gomes in poor form was unsettling our defenders earlier this season). even a defense like fulham's is among the best in the league without necessarily having top individual defenders (though hangeland is class and schwarzer has been fantastic this season) since the team as a whole is so stable, disciplined and well-coached.
