The exact reason the ref had to pause the game was that the pen was hard to call. VAR is used way more often than you’d think, and the ref most often just trust the guys sitting in the room with the screens. In this case those guys probably told the ref that it was a tough call and he needed to have a look at it. Had it been a clear call there would have been no interruption to the game.

I have to say, win lose or draw this and whatever they do in the tournament, I really do not like this French team. Collectively they have been rubbish, tactically they have made decisions that are ultra pragmatic - playing centre backs at fullback is one of my biggest annoyances in football. Individually they have a lot of undoubted talent, but I don't really like the way said individuals play the game or the choices they make. French players often seem to make the game a lot harder than it needs to be.
