Am I the only one not enjoying Spain’s sudden demise? It might be because I have lived there and have Spanish friends but I am surprised that so many here are revelling in their defeat. Chile were fantastic and Spain’s performance has further added to the unpredictability of this World Cup, but they were one of the best teams ever and clearly influenced how a lot of teams play football now. It’s not as if they are great rivals of ours, or went about their play with any arrogance or aggression.

It’s an odd form of schadenfreude. It’s not as if they are full of Arsenal players. It would be even odder if those who purred over Spain/Barcelona from 2008-2012 are now the same people celebrating their demise. I personally find it quite sad to see such a great team full of fantastic players fall so quickly.

Back in the day we had ritual slaughter of bulls. I think the scene in apocalypse now where they do that at the same time Colonel Kurtz is more eloquent about the Spain hate than I could be. Idols are created and torn down, both to make people feel more secure, first in the power of the idol then in the power of subversion.

Prove it.

I knew someone would come back with this.

Any why is it so enjoyable?

Well, there are several reasons:

For one, we've all gotten very tired of the 'tacky-ticky' bollocks. Sure, it was inventive and attractive for a while, but eventually made games feel tiresome and, frankly, tedious affairs.

Secondly, there's been this feeling of increasing arrogance with Spanish football; that "their way was the only way", and a certain level of strutting around the pitch like John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever, both in Champs League matches and Internationals.

Finally, like the England team, there are quite a few wankers in the Spanish side.

BTW, if England go out tonight, I, like quite a few others, don't really care. If there are some funny jokes/posts at their expense, I will laugh at them too.

I hope that clarifies things. :)

EDIT: the only person I feel sorry for through all of this is Iniesta, because I think he is awesome and shockingly under-rated, still.

I'm not happy Spain is out but I am laughing at them for relying on Costa, changing the shape for him, their style for him, their squad selection for his style and then he does sweet FA. That was the biggest tactical f-up since Hitler said , "Let's go east and fight a war on the Russian front, in winter"

For one, we've all gotten very tired of the 'tacky-ticky' bollocks. Sure, it was inventive and attractive for a while, but eventually made games feel tiresome and, frankly, tedious affairs.

Secondly, there's been this feeling of increasing arrogance with Spainish football; that "their way was the only way", and a certain level of strutting around the pitch like John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever, both in Champs League matches and Internationals.

Fair enough, I agree to a point with the first reason and not at all with the second. I don't think there was any arrogance within the national team. I think there has always been an institutional arrogance around Barca in their belief that they transcend football but that's another story. I don't think games were boring, certainly not in the Euros and to be honest a lot of South Africa was quite dull. It may have been boring because so few teams knew how to deal with Spain's possession and just sat back. Now teams have worked it out to an extent but, simultaneously, Spain have declined.

From my perspective I see the more exciting teams like Chile, Colombia, Altletico and Dortmund as very much based on Spain's brand of football (at least off the ball) but with a more direct and visually thrilling twist. I personally remember far more boring teams than Spain that have dominated world football .

I don't agree that any of the individuals are particularly loathsome, perhaps Ramos and Biscuits.

I hoped and thought Chile and Colombia would do well (though not take Spain to the cleaners thus) and love it so far, I just don't get pleasure from seeing Spain necessarily fail. I never have with national teams, other than France and Germany obviously :)

Yes possibly and not playing Koke with him. It might have been worth going without a number nine again.

Not taking Llorente. If you're changing to a big man up front, bring a couple in case your no.1 misfires. And have a plan B
