The decision to rule out Jan Vertonghen’s second goal at White Hart Lane surely tops the lot when it comes to embarrassing the art of officiating.

It was an absolute joke. We're just lucky that for once, one of these ridiculous errors didn't cost us the game! I can remember a few that did!! Pedro Mendes against Manure is probably the all time worst in my memory.

Mendes goal was worse
I don't think it was, at least the officials had an excuse of not being able to keep up with play.
Truly awful officiating all round and I hope the authorities do something about it, not going to hold my breath though....

Mendes goal was worse in that it cost us a win at OT, but this was the linesman not knowing the rules, how bad is that.

It's definitely one of the worst offside decisions in the history of the game. That's for sure.

Didn't that decision cost us a place in Europe that season?

Still think Reading's 'phantom goal' at Watford a couple of seasons ago tops the list!

I expect the lino through his association will issue an apology.
Hasn't happened in the past very often so can't see that happening tbh. Ref teams are given an almost untouchable status, when in reality that sort of decision should lead to someone not ever working at the top level again as they clearly do not know the rules

I think the Mendes one edges it as it would have decided the game, with us winning 1-0 had it been allowed.

An obsolutely horrible howler, but human. The linesman probably reacts to the rule that two opponents must be nearer to the goal line than Jan, and raises his flag failing to sense that Jan was still in his own half when Paulinho hit his perfect pass to him. An unforgivable mistake, but a decision that must be made at the blink of an eye.
We now have goal line technology that would have allowed Pedro's memorable goal to stand, but it seems we will be needing halfway technology next!

If you want to officiate in the world's best league you have to do better. If you aren't up to it then go officiate somewhere less demanding.

To be fair if you get that wrong during an under 7s game you still need to not be doing that job

The linesman would have been standing on the halfway line - they wouldn't usually be in front of the offence so that should rule out human error - besides the linesman had already called offside by mistake twice before. My guess for this is that he was either 1.) paid to keep the scoreline down or 2.) a Sunderland or Arsenal fan.

Would have also got us Champions League.

I feel a bit sorry for Jan, if he had a gaol bonus he lost that.

But mostly I feel sorry for all the people who had bets of spurs winning 3-1.

They really have to explain and apologise for the ridiculous decision. My guess is that linesman knows the rule but in the heat of the moment didn't see when ball was played to Jan and neither did ref - by the time Jan received it, he was well into Sunderland's half. Anyway they have to say something. ...surely?
