Normally would have said Id prefer the FA cup over top 4 but would not swap our season with Chelsea. Ultimately there is a touch of disappointment that this season was not as successful as it could or should have been but we have had some fantastic games this season Liverpool, Real Madrid, Dortmund (home and away), Chelsea and Juve away plus Man U, Arsenal and even ROCHDALE at home are games that will last long in the memory. Good time to be a spurs fan and will be sweet having champions league football in the new gaff next season!

Would love to see Lloris lifting the FA Cup, but truth be told, where we are now? CL football is a must. We're not going to attract the higher calibre of player we need to push on with Poch's 'second phase' by showing them an FA Cup triumph.

This whole winning or CL is starting to annoy me. In the present it is far more important to be in CL as it keeps moving the club forward, generates huge revenue which in turn helps attract better players and helps us go for the major trophies in next few seasons. However, if in hindsight it turns out we didn’t win anything then you might think we were better to have an FA Cup in the record books.

As a club with ambition we should always look to be in CL over a domestic cup.

Option three. CL was crucial this year. In reality if Kane hadn’t got his injury I think we’d have won the cup too though.

Just annoyed we didn’t win the Cup.

We were the best side left in it after City went out but we bottled it.

Still, wouldn’t swap seasons no.

Ask me next season and I’d say yes probably.

Its a really difficult question, but as much as I hate to say it the answer is yes.
At the end of the day it is about trophies, and it would be the first one for the manager and a lot of the players. It would give them a real taste of success and spur them on for more.
There are only 3 domestic trophies you can win each season, and we have qualified for the CL three years in a row now.
We could just field the squad players and youngsters next year in the Europey League, and go all out to get in the Champions League again.

I’m not into the Champions league.

For Starters. It’s not for Champions and it is not a league.
I really don't get why people get so caught up in the name, I mean the Championship isn't for Champions and isn't a ship but nobody's proposing we replace the whole league with a new entry for the Oxbridge Boat Race.

As much as I would love us to have won the cup and am still gutted we have gone out at the semi final stage again it is worth remembering that the only reason Chelsea have been able to win the cup regularly has been regular Champions League as that has (along with the cash) attracted players that are capable of winning cups and leagues.

I dont think that we are going to see the massive injection of cash from owners again so being top 4 and amazing facilities (training ground and stadium) is how we can attract these players to go to the next level.

So if this is another step in our journey to being CL regulars and that we can then turn that into silverware then that is great and I will remain patient and continue to enjoy a team in the last 4 of competitions and playing against top European sides.

What about us and West Ham?

Ye you can do that. A year in the cl is much more valuable to us and West Ham as clubs than it is for Chelsea. Chelsea can afford to have a season out of it and still win a few bits. It's what they do. Hence why their fans looked so meak when they won the fa cup on Saturday. It's just a formality for them.

Does 3 consecutive seasons not count us as CL regulars? If it doesn't then City are in fact the only CL regulars in the prem!

Interesting that all the pundits bang on about how we will have achieved nothing until we win a trophy and all our star players will leave, but only 4% of us appear to agree with them. It seems like most of them are either ignorant of realities or deliberately trying to stir things up.

Went C. It’s all about trophies for me. Fuck being brainwashing like an arsenal fan into thinking there’s a fourth placed trophy. Our honours board doesn’t reflect that.

I think we are far more brainwashed into thinking that trophies are all that should matter. Just look at what's been said about us this year, "they're great but they haven't won anything" - like you have to win something to be a great team. It's bullshit.

And I don't necessarily think qualifying for the CL proves you're a great team either, but it's far more indicative of one than picking up a cup. It means youve been consistently good over 38 games, not a handful, often against lower league opposition.

I'm not sure it does to be honest. Utd, City, Arsenal and Chelsea I would perceive to be regulars over the course of the competition. Until recently we have been Europa league regulars for sure but are we CL regulars yet? It could just be perception but also that transitional period where those who were regulars are no longer. Also what counts as regular? :)

This is our 1st spell of consecutive CL seasons having done 1 a few years back.

Interesting thoughts?

In modern football these days, after 5 seasons the manager and the vast majority of playing staff tend to have gone - I don't think it's worth looking much further back than that.

From 5 years ago for instance, we've changed manager twice, only three of the players are left (Rose, Vertonghen and Dembele), and two of those are heavily linked with moves away this summer. I don't think the achievements of that side or those around them have any relevance to our position today or whether we should be considered CL regulars.

It's a rather meaningless question as phrased. Too simplistic. Not comparing like with like.

We're not in the same place as Chelsea. They have been established in the financial stratosphere of football for over a decade. They have no trajectory: they're there already. So for them, accumulating trophies is at least as important as league placing. They've been in the Champions League and out again and back again. They know they'll be in it again sometime soon. They've won the league a few times and they'll probably do that again too.

By contrast, what's important for Tottenham is to become established in a new level in the hierarchy. We achieve that by building the new stadium, but secondarily we achieve that by becoming perennial Champions League competitors. That's where the money is, but it's equally important that having a routine presence in the Champions League is what can establish our international marketing profile, widen our fan base and attract the kind of player for whom we would normally be outbid, if not in terms of transfer fee, then in terms of salary. So for us, qualifying for the CL in the majority of years is by far the most important thing.

What constitutes a "better season" is different for the different clubs, because we're not starting from the same place, nor trying to achieve the same short term goals.
