BBC Gossip is suggesting Juventus cant afford Alonso now. If we're not in for him for 15mill theres something wrong?!?!?!

theres the spanish link, the fact he's played in the PL for a few years, etc

Would it be a good buisness for Liverpool to sign Barry for say £18m and sell to us Alonso for £15m?

Yeah, i'd snap up Alonso in a heartbeat, even at £15m. I just dont see him sign for a team outside the Champions League. He's a player who i could see at Barcelona or Real Madrid. If neither of those are interested then we might stand a chance. Maybe if we act quickly, Liverpool might want the money quick, so they can sign Barry. Certainly worth a crack i'd say.

Yes, but if we can see it, then probably they can see it, too. We have a chance to sign Alonso only if Liverpool tell him they want to get rid of him and no CL club in Spain or Italy is ready to meet their asking price. Then he may agree to come to Spurs. But Liverpool wil ask for the same money they will give for Barry imo.

Don't think we could have Alonso and Modric in the same midfield chaps. We'd have two of the best passers in the premiership but we'd never actually have the ball.

Besides we havn't been linked with him so it's a little futile to discuss it. Diarra would be a better signing for us than Alonso...don't think that'll happen either though.

Alonso would be my first choice DM. He's a slight upgrade on Carrick IMO, a similar type of player though. A creative DM who is really intellegent and reads the game well. Plenty of Premiership experience. Rafa's stupid for letting him go, in Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano he has one of the best midfield trio's in the world, he just need some decent wingers.

Anyway, I'd pull out all the stops to get alonso, he would make our team tick the way Carrick used to.

I hate to dissagree with you fella, but Modric could play Steeds role really well. I've actually read an interview with him in which he says he does most of his damage coming in from a left sided position.

If we were to play Lennon and Gio on the wings, we'd be overrun, especially with the way our full backs like to get forward.

Wherever Modric is going to play our main priority should be a ball winning central midfielder rather than a creative one like Alonso. For what it's worth I think Modric will play in the middle for us but I don't want to take this down the formation alley from whence there is no return.

Alonso would be a really sweet signing, exactly the player we need in DM, also would be a great player for Hudd to emmulate and train with.

I think of all the DM options, we should get Alonso, assuming he has any interest in joining us. I guess with Ramos we have a slight chance........

Where is this talk of Alonso coming from, has there actually been any ITK indication that we might be in for him?

I think someone like Alonso/Veloso would be great additions to the squad.

IMO, to defend in midfield is not about tackling its about reading the game, cutting out the pass and slowing down any momentum. Carrick and Scholes were the preferred CM partnership of Manu, Alonso/Veloso Modric could contest that partnership.
(Although I think Modric will be gradually moved into centre midfield, like Fabregas was, just so he can get used to the pace.)

Agreed. Alonso would be an excellent buy. It makes you wonder whether there has been a fall out between Benitez and Alonso.

I'm not sure on Alonso, I think he looks good when given time to pass the ball around, but he needs not only someone to be the physical presence next to him when defending but also someone to break from midfield. I dont think we need him - 15 mill should be better spent, and if we did get him we would still have the same problems with our midfield.

Not seen much of this spanish goalie, but interesting that the spanish gk has played 20 odd first team games, where as Button doesnt look like getting anywhere near first team football, not even at Rochdale.

His height is a bit of an issue if it is under 6 foot We need someone who will deal with crosses. However, being small he might leave it to the defence all the time, so at least there wouldnt be any indecision

Seem to recall last season or the season before Alonso had committed the most fouls in the league so that would seem to disprove the notion that he doesn't get stuck in (although I'm not sure if persistent fouling is a good attriubute!). To be honest he is pretty much Carrick but with a better range of passing. Personally think him and Modric in the middle could work because Modric seems to spring forward from a deep position whereas Alonso tends to sit and reads the game very well. Having said all that there's nothing to suggest we're even looking at him is there!?

To be honest I think you've got Alonso massively wrong. Yes he's a great passer, but he's also one of the best ball winners in the Prem. He's like Carrick in that he can combine the ball winning side of DM play, along with the ability to make the play from a deep role. He'd offer our back 4 great protection and be able to spray the ball around and release the fast players early. He'd be a brilliant signing, but I really can't see Liverpool selling to us or him wanting to come here. I'm sure Benitez will see us our their main rivals for 4th, so their is now way he's going to sell us a player like Alonso.

I was speaking to a couple of Liverpool supporters about Alonso leaving last week and they're not bothered in the slightest that he may be leaving them, noting the opinion that they think he's been well and truly found out in the PL. Their main reason being that if he is closed down quickly he is utterly ineffective and that the PL is just not for him. Uncomposed, panicky and a luxury were other terms used.

I've always rated him but it seems those who really see him week in week out really do not.
