From the BBC News site:

A Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of raping a teenage girl in Manchester.

Bolton Wanderers striker Ivan Klasnic is accused of attacking the 17-year-old in a city centre apartment.
She contacted Greater Manchester Police at 0500 BST on Monday. The 30-year-old, who also plays for Croatia, was arrested later.

He was released on bail until 1 November pending further inquiries, a police spokesman said.

The player, who has won 38 caps for Croatia and scored 12 international goals, signed a two-year deal with Bolton Wanderers in August.

That's the bit that shocked you? What's the world coming to? :)
How come his name's been released?

I sadly agree with al_pacino on this, with footballers this happens so often these days that i wouldnt be surprised by any footballer being accused. It becomes just usual, everytime its the same discussion with the same conclusions at the end.

Lets hope its not your daughter one day.

Maybe my post was misunderstood. When was the last time a footballer was held responsible for what he did? It always stirs up big discussions but at the end the footballer always will play the next gameweek.

I meant with my post that i just cant be bothered anymore to discuss these cases, its always the same outcome no matter what.

Edit: The accident that made me lose hope that a footballer will ever be charged the way hes supposed to be was FC Thun 2008, where half the squad had fun with a underaged girl and at the end only two were fined with around 5000 swiss francs or smth like that.

dont get me wrong, any real case of this sort of thing is undefendable and sick but often i think its just a case of wanting some cash or attention from wealthy people. Ive even had a friend of mine accused and later obviously found innocent but its still extremely damaging.

I imagine nothing will come of it, as usual. It's too often we hear these allegations, even if they did have sex or whatever, how can anyone know if it was consensual. I know she was young, but she was of legal age, and they were in a flat at 5am, I can't imagine that he kidnapped her and took her back to the flat. If you're in someone's flat at 5am you're only looking for one thing.

That may not be true. This could be the scenario.

A young girl meets a famous footballer in a club or bar and he comes on to her. She's flattered, quite naturally. What a boost to her ego.

Back to his place for coffee or to party with him and friends? What an offer. Something to tell her friends about later. Head turned and easily persuaded I'd say.

Does that mean she wanted to have sex with him? It is possible he misread the signs because the girl may well have been a bit worse for drink or drugs (as he may well have been too) and overwhelmed by being picked up by a footballer. Things may have gone a lot further than she wanted them to. We just don't know.

Yes, there are girls out there who would do it for publicity and for money, but surely not all of them. Some of them have just been foolish and not thought about the possible consequences of putting themselves into the position of not being able to stop what happens.

I would think there are many who wouldn't even report it or tell anyone, let alone make a public accusation of rape.

If this is the case and it was a drunken mistake then im not sure rape can be the right allegation here. if she went back voluntarily and was too drunk to realise what was going on (as long as he was too) then its a non starter for me.
