Sources close to Watford football club are claiming that the price tag on much wanted striker Ashley Young is around £8 million despite turning down a bid from West Ham United very close to that figure.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd was not keen on the idea of selling Young to fellow relegation strugglers and so yesterday rejected a £7 million offer from the cash rich Hammers.

Spurs are still leading the chase for young with rumours of a swap deal involving Callum Davenport and Wayne Routledge increased yesterday after Spurs turned down offers for the pair from Newcastle and Fulham respectively.

The latest club reportedly showing an interest in Young is Aston Villa who's search for a striker has been well documented having previously failed to convince Spurs to release Robbie Keane or Jermain Defoe.

Young currently plays as a striker for Watford but has more traditionally operated as a left sided midfielder which is where Spurs would be looking to deploy his services.

Young would also offer additional cover up front with Egyptian striker Mido apparently heading for the exit door after falling out with boss Martin Jol.

8m? get him. fits into our policy perfectly

Young may or may not turn into a very good Premiership player, what we do know is that he's made a promising start, but is that enough to justify a 7 mil plus price tag??

Routledge may or may not turn into a very good Premiership player, what we do know is that he made a promising start, but, and this is crucial, he's our player and will cost us nothing.

Perhaps they're not like for like and by all accounts Young has a decent left foot (although he's right footed), but I say stick with Routledge for now, recall him from Fulham and see how he goes.

Very true. Maybe I am getting caught up in the hype. This time of year gets me excited
  4. 18Klinsmann
Surely he is not worth that much. He is right footed as far as I know, and his performances in the PL do not justify that sort of price tag. Routledge was a similar player at the time we signed him and cost only half that amount.

I have not seen much of Young, however when in the same England U21 match a while back, Routeledge looked the more complete player. If young is worth #8m how much is Wayne worth? It would appear much less to us at the moment. I guess it's a question of balance / speed / aggression in the team on the pitch, that needs to be found, and a fast natural left footer would help.

The whole thing is bollocks. The fact is this - Routledge has not been given a fair chance - it would be an absolute joke to buy Young - I wouldnt mind getting him for 1m or 2m but anymore is a joke/risk. Routledge has got it and if we were to release routledge for 3m and get young for 5/6/7/8/9m etc then I would be severely pissed off...I wouldnt even want to swap them (no money involved).

No he is not worth that much but what we would be paying for is a player who is currently on form and doing the business in the premiership, Routledge hasnt been on form for 2 years now since he was at palace and he wasnt as complete a player then, he was an ok goal provider, his finishing has always been pitiful. since then routledge was not good enough to get in a relegation threatened pompey team or get in a fulham team on a regular basis.

If the management team think he is good enough to be a top prem player in the future and go on and play for england then we should sign him even if it is £15 mill it wont matter, but if they think he is an average guy who can (do a job) then we dont want him, we can pick up those sort of guys for a couple of million,

some sensable & reasonable comments, young is not proven, Routledge hasnt been given a chance to show us what he can do over an extended time and we wont find anyone of Calums talent whos happy to work hard to be 3rd choise. If we want him and we agree with the 8mil valuation then pay cash and keep the playes.

I like Young but think he's got more to offer as a striker than a left winger and personally i dont think he will ever be worth more than 8mil so we wont recoup if he turns out be be a one season wonder.

What ever happens i think we should hang on to Davenport, maybe at a push i'd go up to 5mil and Routledge.

One thing I suppose to figure into these prices is the money coming from the new TV deal in the summer. Perhaps some of the clubs are trying to steal a march on the others now before Price inflation kicks off again next season?
  10. longdistancespursfan
Agreed that we should keep davenport, even if we get another centre half in, gardner should be the one to go.

I dont think routledge will ever get an extended time with us unless lennon gets a serious injury, if he was shining I would say bring him back but I dont think he looks good in such a mediocre team, love him to prove me wrong but cant see it happening.
  11. longdistancespursfan

Could be but I think its more just a case of clubs dont really want to sell there stars, lennon is probably worth £15 million (obviously 25mill if it was chelski) but would we sell him if someone bid 30million? I would hope not. Huddlestone is probably worth the same amount as young, young has prob had more playing time in the premiership but if we sold thud for 8 million our fans would be going mad. If you want a clubs top player then you are more than likely going to have to pay double what that players is worth, this has been proved with the likes of curtis davies, you only get value for money with average mediocre players or from clubs that are desperatly struggling or want a problem player off their hands, there arent to many of these around.

I wonder how much Fulham offered for Routledge. I think Routlege is worth more than £2m if Young is worth £7m.

Remember that we got Routledge on the cheap because of the tribunal. Think it was something like £1.25m rising to £2m on appearances (of which he has had few).

So IF we did use him in part exchange for transfer of another player Routledge's value won't necessarily be £2m.

Ultimately it's a question of how good he is and whether he's the answer to our problems on the left.I don't know, but my guess is he's not. As has been already pointed out, it's not hard to stand out in a poor team. We should hold on to our money until someone better becomes available, and look at bringing Taarabt gradually into the first team. He's supposed to be really talented. It would be a pity to see him go back to Lens because he wasn't given a chance here.

if we're so badly after Ashley Young. would that mean zeigler is heading for the exit door :hello:
  16. longdistancespursfan
I agree that if he is good enough the cost dosn't matter but I dont think Taarabt is going to be the answer to our left wing problems, he is a central player from what I have picked up on, I think the club know this too as if they thought he was the answer then he would have played out there for the reserves the other day and he would be spending as much time as possible out there to learn the position and role.

When a player come in we ofter hear he can play there as well and then they never can (play well anyway).

ekotto - can play left side of midfield as well
mendes -can play anywhere across the midfield
    tainio - (as above)
stalteri - can play both full back positions and midfield

Routledge was at the end of his contract and the only reason we agreed a fee at all was to avoid letting the tribunal set one, as Routledge had been a youth player with Palace.

Get him for 8 is what I say. I am a fan of his and have been for a while. He does look more aggressive than Wayne and we really need that at the moment. If he can be a backup striker then thats also good because we might need that too.
  19. JoeT
It's 'critical time' for Spurs in the EPL. We have 32 points, just ahead of a chasing pack and just behind a (faltering?) Portsmouth. We also have key cup games coming as well. It's time to get our ass in gear...right now. If Ashley Young seriously help us to do that, then get him. We missed out on Duff earlier; if we had been successful in getting him then we might be higher placed in the league now.
