Midfield diamond. I know it seems crazy to play Sanchez at RB but I’d rather try that than be certain Trippier gets roasted. He’s good in 1v1 situations, I don’t see Mane getting much change out of him if he faces him up like he does to most fullbacks. Might have trouble with keeping him from running in behind but Toby is one of the best at reading those situations when teams get in behind us so I’d be confident it wouldn’t be a problem.

I know Moura scored a hat-trick but really he is not part of our best 11 it’s as simple as that. 1 game doesn’t change that. Him and Lamela on the bench gives us another option with pace, trickery and flair between them

Moura has to play. Rose has to play. Toby/Jan have to play. Kane if fit has to play. Sissoko has to play. Son has to play. Eriksen has to play. Dele has to play. Trippier should not play so Aurier should.

I would be very tempted to have a real go and try to match them up.

Hugo

Aurier toby Jan rose

Eriksen sissoko dele

Moura kane son

The only change I guess would be winks in for Dele but I feel that it is far more likely that it would be moura who would miss out.

Ultimately we have to play our best players and try to score more goals than them. Simple I know, but sitting back against this lot is suicide.

You have to pick the best team capable of winning this game, not your 11 best players.

One of Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Son and Moura will need to be on the bench. Otherwise, the side is far too open.

Diamond in midfield, similar to when we gave pool a hard time in the 2nd half the last time we played. Jenas said on the radio tonight this is what he thinks we’ll go with, I hope he’s right.

This is the exact lineup I would go with as well, besides swapping Son for Lucas. I know - I would not have said so even once this season, but looking at the last 2 weeks or so, with Son being under the radar a bit and Moura obviously producing one of the best performances in CL history I think he must start. I was quite surprised when I looked at his goals this season - often scores in the big games. Scored against United, PSV, Barcelona, Liverpool and obviously Ajax. You notice quite quickly if he's having an off day, so if he does, change him at 55' for Son.

You're probably right. Depends on Kane's and Winks' fitness and game readiness at the time. Think it may be Son on the bench. And I think that's largely due to what Moura gives us in terms of defensive qualities and physicality against the various types of threats that Liverpool have. He's a little fucker, but he's relentless with his running and quicker than Son to react defensively to attacking threats, which we will need time and again with Liverpool.

Moura's a better presser, and will also probably give Robertson a tougher time thinking about his own attacking forays on that right defensive flank for us, which we need with Trips as RB. That LWB for Liverpool is one of their biggest attacking threats.

Moura also wins headers and his aerial strength will give their CBs something to think about with his knock ons to Kane, Eriksen, Alli etc.,

Son seems to link up better with Kane than Moura does in attack, but I think we just have to give something up, and look at our whole shape across the park, and the opponent we're facing. There's really not that much to choose between Son and Moura as attackers. They're very different, and we're lucky in that respect.

It'll be great to have a bench which includes Son/Moura, Lamela, Llorente. And they'll all be fit should we need to change things in the game.

I completely got the wrong end of the stick with this post.

I was thinking more on the lines of starting with a few Gin and Tonics.

Then move onto pints of Stella during the game.

Finishing off with a couple of bottles of the old widow.

Maybe a 3-5-2

With the option of bringing on a couple of Jaeger shots if things start going wrong.

Astonished by how many people would put Winks and Auerier straight into the team despite their not having played in months. That's just bonkers. It's classic too-clever-by-half, tactics-board thinking. One of those things you realise is a mistake 10 minutes after ko.

Harry is different obv. If he's 100% fit he prob should start for Llorente, though him coming off the bench wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Main sticking point for me is the double sided coin of 3 at the back. There’s no way we’re not having Jan & Toby at the back but the pace of Sanchez could be vital against Salah & Mane.

On the flip side, having a back 4 gives us an extra body in midfield where Liverpool try to create chaos

I think winning the midfield is more important so I’d go back four with

—————Hugo—————
Trip—-Toby——Jan-—Rose
———Winks—Sissoko——
—Dele—-Eriksen——Son—
—————Kane—————

Leaves us with a few attacking options off the bench depending on how the game is going
  • Lucas - Need pace & dribbling
  • Lamella - Need battle and aggression
  • Llorente - Need to create panic in their box and feed off knockdowns

If Winks is still injured, play Dier, Sanchez on the bench.
If Kane is still injured, play Son, Aurier on the bench.
If Vertonghen is still injured, play Sanchez. If this is in conjunction with Winks being injured, Foyth on the bench.

Liverpool play 4-3-3 with the full backs giving them width, the 3 in the middle putting in a shift to cover the ground to allow their forward 3 to play with freedom. We can pretty much guess their starting XI and how they'll approach the game. The decision for Poch is does he try and match them, or do we exert a game plan of our own.

If we opt to match and go with 3 up top (e.g. Son-Kane-Moura) then we'll need a more workmanlike midfield meaning both Alli and Eriksen may be a luxury. At least one may need to give way. If we go for the 4-2-3-1 we played against them in the league this season, then one of Moura or Son may not start and we'll need a passer next to Sissoko, so a fit Winks would be ideal.

Agree with that analysis, except Alli and Eriksen are two of the hardest working technical players around.

When we beat Klopp's Liverpool 1.0 at Wembley 4-1 (and Madrid) - we played a 532 in a low block, and it only worked because the Alli-Winks-Eriksen trio were able to scuttle across the width of the pitch relentlessly for 90 minutes.

I think Poch will have 2 or 3 systems based on who is fit. Winks has to start if fit but he's 50/50 at best, if out I'd play a compact 433 with Alli-Sissoko-Eriksen - and counter them in the space behind their full backs.

It will be much harder and riskier for them to counter-press our midfield if we've 2 or 3 (with Winks) technical players in there.

How we started second half v Ajax but Aurier and Kane (if fit enough) for Trippier and Llorente. Get Lucas and Son running off Kane who is no slouch in the pace department either. My only other thought is Winks, but I don't know who I'd drop for him, though realistically I suppose better to start on the bench and be brought on if needed.

Lloris, Aurier, Alderwiereld, Vertonghen, Rose, Sissoko, Eriksen, Alli, Lucas, Son, Kane

4-3-3 or even flexible enough to go to a diamond with Son or Lucas rotating and switching.
