Chaos reigned at the Marassi this afternoon when the home side’s Ultras incredibly invaded the pitch in the second half to confront their relegation-threatened side who were 4-0 down to fellow strugglers Siena.

The Ultras came on to the field in the 53rd minute and accused their side of being unworthy of wearing the red and blue jersey and demanded that the players give up their shirts, something which captain Marco Rossi obliged.

He collected shirts from many players who were tearful at proceedings including Giuseppe Sculli but he would not hand over his shirt, telling the fans that he was giving his all for Genoa and deserved to wear the jersey.

Eventually, after a lengthy delay play resumed and although Genoa did manage to reduce the deficit by scoring through a Cristiano Del Grosso with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Siena had put themselves in a commanding position through a Franco Brienza brace and goals from Mattia Destro and Luigi Giorgi.

Brienza gave Siena the lead over a slack Grifone outfit with a deflected free kick and their lead was doubled minutes later when Destro headed home from Del Grosso’s cross.

Brienza grabbed his second when he was given far too much room in the penalty area before deftly volleying home and a fourth was added when Giorgi curled a fine strike into the top corner which led to the unfortunate scenes witnessed from the Ultras at the Marassi.

They have every right to be honest, the squad that Genoa have are easily a top 10, considering how much they spent in January and bringing in the likes of Gilardino the fans expect more. You can fully appreciate where they're coming from, even if it is slightly extreme, but no one got hurt and hey, maybe this will be the kick up the arse they need?

This season has been a total write off on their part though if they stay up, much like La Viola (Fiorentina)

Italian football throws up some real gems sometimes. :D

My favourite bit isn't mentioned in this article, but Giuseppe Sculli is former mafia boss Giuseppi Morabito's grandson, and I just love the idea of him having a "chat" with the pitch invaders and coming to an "agreement" with them. Can only imagine what he actually said...!
