Former Brazil international Zico has admitted he was surprised that Paulinho wasn’t replaced in the Seleção’s 0-0 draw with Mexico.

I think Zico has it spot on with regards to Paulinho, when we signed him he was playing so well he was a key player in Brazil's lineup. Throughout the year for us and now with Brazil he is far from that player.
I hope he can return to the player he was but when I struggle to see a reason why his form has dropped off so significantly for club & country, I can't say I am too optimistic.

Zico has his head screwed on right. I fail to see how paulinho continues to be in the starting eleven. Some of you might disagree but if he wasnt a spurs player it might make you think more clearly im sure

To be fair to Pauli, Big Phil can only use so many subs in one game and he's already 1 down when he starts with Fred.

I can't help but thinking coaching at Spurs has done him no favours; neither AVB nor Tim exactly encouraged him to play his natural game. AVB curbed his and everyone else's natural adventurousness, while Tim was asking him to play deeper and provide the supply line to the forwards, which is not his strength (nor anyone else's at Spurs).

If Poch has a clear idea of how to use him he may succeed in turning round his form, but like with Soldado I am starting to think we should accept any decent offer for a player whom we have reduced to a shadow of his former self.

I agree with most of this, but apart from arriving late in the box and scoring goals (good attribute for a midfielder) I saw him add virtually nothing last season. I admit I didn't see much of him before he joined Spurs, but going by what Ive seen at Tottenham and at the world cup, I'm not sure how to define or characterize him as a character. What are his strengths etc? Apart from what I mentioned I have no idea, surely he offers something more than that? I haven't seen anything yet.

I'm not having a dig at him, I just genuinely don't know because I didn't see him pre Spurs?

Clearly Paulinho is in need of an extended rest. His played from we signed him far to many games.
How many games did he play? Why does he need a rest? I didn't ever see him play with any kind of intensity, he didn't play all games, he was out injured for a while ... why does he need a rest over anyone else?

The difference is that Paulinho is taking the place of people like Ramires and Fernandinho whereas they don't really have another option up front

You could just play neymar with paulhino just off him and or hulk. No need to play Fred or jo. And still include fernandinho

But it's just scape hosting, one player is not the cause of Brazil's problems. They aren't closing or playing fast clinical passes. And their movement is shocking. But I guess that could be all down to the demon paulhino too, bastard :D

Might be a bit early to think about letting him go; good players don't go bad overnight...Didn't his drop in form co-inside with a bad injury? It seems to me he never did get back after that...maybe he was rushed back too quickly.
Get him back and let him have an off-season...even a short break before any pre-season games might do the trick?

fred's contribution relies solely on that of the supply(which comes from the midfield and wing backs), with paulinho and others in midfield being unable to create for him then he's not going to do much himself. replacing paulinho will help brazil more than ditching fred.

Pochettino apparently (I read it somewhere!) believes that the best form of defence aside from keeping possession is preventing the opposition from having any outlets, in other words, tight and intelligent pressing based on excellent positional sense. If you have to tackle, you've already lost control of the situation. So a perfect defensive midfield performance could constitute great positional play for 90 minutes barely ever even touching the ball.

This might be where Paulinho's strengths come to the fore.

This may or may not be a joke. It certainly isn't funny.
