Zidane: I've never heard of them.

One of football's great myths is that three-time World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane was rejected as a teenager by Tottenham.
The World Cup winner, who played for Real Madrid and Juventus, was supposedly branded 'too wooden' by Gerry Francis.

But when Zidane was asked about his widely-discussed trial in north London this week, ZZ looked baffled and spluttered "who?".
His translator apologised and explained: "I don't think he has heard of Tottenham Hotspur."

Anyone old enough to have remembered this, even if it was as a rumour????

It's been mentioned on here before, but I don't believe it. There are a few Zidane rumours going round, such as Blackburn ownrer Jack Walker asking why they'd need him when they have Tim Sherwood, or Villa opting for Mark Draper insted of Zidane. They are all probably urban myths.

Why should he have heard of us?

The problem with Spurs fans is that we have an overinflated view of the importance of our club. In the time that Zidane played in France, Italy and Spain, we weren't in the Champions League, were briefly in the UEFA Cup and spent most of our time in the lower reaches of the Prem.

Would you expect Wayne Rooney or Ashley Cole to have heard of Osasuna or Getafe?

Load of old rubbish that ZZ didn't know Tottenham Hotspur. You'd expect someone involved in football at his level to know all the teams in the leading european leagues.

well we do, so surely someone with more to do with football would know about other teams in other leagues

I'd be shocked if they hadn't.

I'd be shocked if he hasn't heard of Spurs. I'm sure any football fan worth his salt could name a string of Spanish, Italian and even French, German and Portugese sides beyond the CL regulars.

We're a famous English club and as has been pointed out, he's played with and against Spurs players in the past and his head coach at France left to become our manager!

Yes, because a footballers knowledge of the game begins when he turns professional...absolute nonsense!

Anybody who has taken an interest in European in the last 30 years will know about Tottenham Hotspur.

Zidane is just being a git.
