Surely he can't be serious.

of course he isn't being serious, he is just on the wind up

anyone who has read his interviews or listened to him throughout his career knows he comes out with stuff like this all the time, he is one of the top players in the world though and has been for some time.

He says it but doesn't really think it but there's plenty of players who don't say it but do think it.
Mind you anybody that wins the league ten times in twelve years with an unbroken run between 2003/4 to 2010/11 at six different clubs in four different countries is surely entitled to have a high opinion of himself.

Spot on, and in my understanding of the word arrogance it's a 'misplaced' sense of one's own abilities. If you're one of the World's top football players then you have a right to express that fact I guess.
