Agreed.

Conceding from set pieces and poor fitness (aka conceding late goals) were Jol's, and now Rednapp's, Achilles' heals.

Whatever you think about Ramos and his other weaknesses, he definitely solved these two ridiculously frustrating problems.

The ending today was so obviously.

But Benitez has proved this season that zonal marking on corners doesn't work in the PL.

As did Egil Olsen at Wimbledon.

We've been letting goals in from set pieces (consistently) for like 10 years now. Gross, Graham, Hoddle, Pleat, Santini, Jol, Ramos, Redknapp.

I'm starting to think there's some sort of set piece curse.

As for "zonal" marking - watch the first goal again, that's our problem. If we'd picked up the individuals we wouldn't have been 1-0 down (well, not from that set piece anyway )

Damn shame Ramos couldn't be bothered to learn English and our English players didn't have the respect for him. Things would've been rosier now.

Having a numerous goalkeepers over the past 20 years that have failed to command their 6 yard box maybe the root cause. Our centre backs are good, but a commanding goalkeeper and Spurs is like chalk and cheese.

Personally I though we were much better under zonal. People have a go at Liverpool, but they don't concede shedloads of goals do they. Put Dawson zonally at near post and Woodgate in in the centre of six yard box and we won't concede too many.

Mourinho showed how an attacking team can exploit man-to-man marking, by deliberately instructing players like Terry to block off defenders. Although it's illegal, refs almost never give a foul.

Also, given our defenders' tendency to get caught on their heels, and end up a yard or two behind the player they're meant to be marking, I'm with Ramos and zonal defending. At least our players' starting position is correct, and they each know their job is to defend a key area.

We've been shit on corners and set pieces ever since Michael Carrick left, he did a vital job at the corner of the 6 yard box cutting them out!

Liverpool have had the best defence in the league last few years, this season oknot so good, but zonal is a good idea.

Its hard to change....ramos tried it but as he said our players lack intelligence

i think the actual problem is that we just can't mark at all, i don't think it matters weather it's zonal or man

Well the first goal today palacios and zokora didnt bother moving they presumably shouldve been marking the guy that scored and the idiot behind him, 2nd goal assou ekotto never made an effort to track his man and the 3rd goal dawson and palacios took each other out cudicini went nowhere and bentley kicked the post instead of the ball.. sounds like comedy if you are a neutral..

Or he was just not good enough at coaching them.

I prefer zonal, I think our set piece defending improved under Ramos, but youre always going to concede some goals from set pieces. And the bit about Carrick is right, he cut out a large percentage of corners before they even got to the danger area.

I prefer man marking. Responsibility for errors is more clear cut. But we are woeful at defending set pieces.

We worry too much about watching the man we're markings pretty dance, rather than the flight of the ball.

We get muscled out of the way too easily.

We need to be more physical in the box. If we can't win the header, at least push the opposition out of the flight of it. The ref rarely gives a penalty for a bit of argy bargy from corners.

The system is irrelevant if you don't have enough men who are big and can head the ball.
We are crap at defending set pieces and we are crap at scoring from set pieces for that simple reason!
Too many small players on our team - Ekotto,Modric,Lennon, and Defoe are all starting 11 players.Zokora,Bentley and now Palacios are not big guys either.
On top of that 2 of our biggest players can't jump 6 inches in the air - Corluka and Pavlyuchenko.
So basically if Daws or Woody can't get their heads to it -we are fucked.
What happened to Harry wanting bigger physical players in this window?

how about some good old fashioned ' jus' get your fucking 'ead to the ball first son ' ?

and by the way, the first goal looked like something from an american football pitch involving blockers and running backs, made me almost sick, ive always hated bolton.

Nah mate sorry but I can't agree. Juande had a good command of the English language but chose to let Poyet do the interviews. Probably so he could avoid answering why we generally performed so terribly during his reign. You sure you aren't just posting in the heat of the moment?
