We've definitely switched to zonal marking on defensive corners. And "master tactician" Ray Wilkins hasn't even noticed yet...

it did look like that on the first corner i saw. we looked less concerned with grappling with the opposition, certainly for the 3/4 men front of the goal.

Yes he did notice.

I like Ray Wilkins. I think he is well cool.

He eventually spotted it in the 74th minute where most normal fans spotted it early.

Frightening isn't it.

Liverpool had the best premiership defence last year...and the year before. With Zonal marking.

I met Ray Wilkins last month. He was a lovely man. He didn't even mind when I had to break off the interview to run off and vomit in the bathroom.

I was hungover, you see.

Yup. Wilkins was still on the old script.

However, it wasn't quite as frightening as Curbishley saying he didn't know what formation Spurs were playing in the second half against West Ham. I mean if he really couldn't tell from the touchline, he should have sent one of his coaches up into the stand.

dont like it.what happens if theres 2 men in your zone? or if there is no one in your zone, do you go in to another zone?.
but i'm happy for them to try anything at the moment...
letting a goal in from a corner could soon be known as the hotspur!!! 'man united have just consided a goal from a hotspur!!!!'

shouldnt matter, shouldnt matter if there is 5 in your zone. the point of the system is you attack the ball when it gets to your part of the box, rather than watching a bloke as he runs around trying to get away from you

I think neither totally man marking nor zonal is ideal, but zonal has its advantages in that the defenders can focus on winning the ball (or at least challenging for it) whereas with man marking it only takes one individual to mess up and a player has a free header.

What we really need is a combination of the two - all out zonal will be predictable and teams will be able to set themselves up to expose it.

I didnt mind the fact we had men all along the six yard box, however if there are opposition players pulling a long way back from the far post, the system has to stretch out a bit more so that the player cannot make a running jump. I think the real key is that we have to give ourselves a very good chance of attacking the ball to clear it, not do standing jumps as you will easily be outjumped by someone running in.

In the end we didnt concede, and while you cant expect to win every ball we did at least make it hard for them

I don't think we've conceded from a set piece since the Villa fiasco and Poyet's promised change. But after the Stalteri/Chimbonda substitution at a corner yesterday, God knows how we didn't let one in.

Because I don't and I was there watching it.
