Benteke is of course a risk, sadly the only way to minimise that risk is to up the anti regarding price and thus quality.

These days £20m does not guarantee anything.

But we won't go into the next level of player who is more 'tried and tested' at our level unless there are other catches age etc.

And why are you saying that Benteke is like Bent in the fact that he won't drastically improve us? You're saying that like its fact. I think he will, my opinion, hence why I really hope we get him. AVB is obviously convinced to.

Fair enough if you think he will. If he signs I'd rather be wrong! Not sure you can state that AvB likes Benteke as a fact either. Has all the hallmarks of a resale value, Levy/committee signing to me!
AVB wanted Willian and Moutinho and got Siggy and Dembele and a last minute Dempsey!
Us trying to sign a player isn't necessarily a player AVB wants signed.

While it's never a good idea to rely on balls being pumped into the box, potentially having Benteke, Paulinho, Bale and maybe Chadli in and around the box, they will win some headers.

There simply isn't another striker in the Premier league who has Benteke's qualities and is available.

Dempsey, Adebayor (full transfer), Sigurdsson and Dembele were all intra-league stats orientated signings; it's somewhat of a angle we seem to have picked up these last couple of years, Parker was also the year before. Man Utd did it time and again over the years; buying top performers from other clubs it was almost a Ferguson trademark, Valencia, Young, Carrick, Ferdinand, Berbatov and of course Van Persie all recent examples.
It's obviously well documented that Liverpool tried it themselves but made a right horlicks with Carroll et al but generally married with a bit of nous it's a good strategy.

Where are we? We need a striker. Benteke is by far and away the best available performer from the season just gone by.
It would actually represent something of a coup for us to sign him ahead of the more powerful and moneyed teams around us.
I also feel that way about Paulinho.

But my point is we have some creativity in Holtby and hopefully we'll see more of Carroll as well.

Don't get me wrong mate, we do need some more creativity at home when teams sit deep and also need to play at a higher tempo which creative passing definitely helps.

All I'm saying is that we don't need a specific eleven to rhyme off to each other. I like the idea of pace and power away from home, it served us very well last season. if AVB has good midfield options, which I believe he does now, he can mix it up to how he sees fit.

And yes, some creativity from a left sided forward wouldn't go a miss either. I just don't subscribe to the view that a Mata type of signing, or one of that ilk and stature, is an absolute must.

I honestly think we missed Ades 1st touch and build up play more than hs goals when he was off form last season! We need a striker that can play alone and bring ppl into play, then have the vision to play our placement like Bale and Lennon in behind.

Sorry but you've completely lost me now, I was talking about Benteke and how "some" of our fans are never happy with who we are linked with, now you're going on about wide forwards with no pace, Ade, and some strange jargon about "playing our placement". Time to go and watch the boxing I think

His passing is probably the worst element of his game. IMO the rest of his game (goals and assists especially) makes up for this.

He bullied defenders for fun mate. His physical prowess is really impressive and he uses it - something Adebayor does nowhere near enough IMO, and he brings others into the game very well. Adebayor has more finesse though, I wouldn't dispute that and on a really good day would be ahead of Benteke at the moment. But those days are nowhere near consistent enough at the moment. Don't forget Ade has a lot more experience than Benteke as well....he's a good 6 years older than him.

Ultimately though I think Benteke will be ever better and I think he'll be a hell of a lot more consistent as well.

We need a complete squad which has pace power and creativity soo we can adapt to different teams in different games. Creativity for when we struggle to break teams down, Pace and power against top teams and Away from home on the counter!

Alternatively we need a finisher that can play the middle prong of a new formation: 4-3-3.
A goalscorer with power & willingness and good finishing abilities.

The 5 behind can concern themselves with creating.

All this talk about Chadli not being an improvement over Lennon is ridiculous.

If Lennon was in the Ervidesie (spelling) would he score and assist as much as Chadli did?

Lennon is the most one dimensional player on our team. I will not stop beating this drum until people come off their infatuation with his 'tracking back' ability.

An upgrade on Lennon (Townsend being one) is a necessity. Done and done!

Not saying its fact, but I thought AVB had been monitoring him for ages...I'm sure there were loads of reports on this in the second half of the season...hence I said convinced.

Well aware of what went down last season, but one would think that AVB has got more input after having a very good first season, Baldini coming in and the rumours of Sherwood leaving etc.

Maybe input is the wrong word, perhaps they'll be more confidence over his suggested targets.
