Well, I wasn't expecting that!

4-4-2? Ade and Defoe? Siggy as a CM?

I'm a little discombobulated.

(But it is attacking - huzzah!)

Would've preferred Fryers for Sigs at cb with Capoue alongside Dembele

Lets be fair, we are missing a lot of centre backs and centre mids. Capoue is needed in defence, Sandro and Paulinho are out, Eriksen has had a short cameo from the bench since coming back from injury and may not be ready to start yet, and there may be rotation at work, oh and we are playing West Ham reserves in the League Cup. 4-4-2 and trying a few things out isn't that outrageous.

Exactly, it's a 4-4-2 only in name, but the midfield is so fluid due to intelligent players like Nasri and Silva knowing how to link play and find space.

Not just leg it full speed down the line and launch the ball into the area to no one in particular.

oh and CM 2 for Dembele and Siggy read Yaya Toure and Fernandinho...

What about Atletico Madrid?

The game is starting to move back to 4 4 2, Not the old 1 we all know but a more fluid version where the tactic ends up outnumbering the 3 in midfield with 4.

If Gomes would be in the goal I would have guessed this our transfer window shop who can up their prices.4

Anyway, let's do it and get behind that lot. Maybe we will win it. And i prefer a 5-4 over a 1-0

I'm delighted kyle walker is captain, he did'nt give up like the rest of them Sunday.. he kept going & showed commitment & glad he gets his reward.
As for starting team the only thing I'd of changed is fryers cb with chicheres & Capoue in midfield with either Dembele or Holtby

Give the guy a chance, things needed changing and it's being done. At least wait for a league game before judgement begins.

He may just have seen their shit squad and picked a team to win the match.

Hope so, I just thought playing Lamela in this competition against a premiership team would have been an ideal test for Lamela to see how he faired and get experience.

Lol I'm hoping Sherwood's locked Lamela, Holtby, Erikson, Chadli, Soldado and a football in a big room for a week, turned the lights out and told em they can fucking come out when they can pass to each other blind :D

It's very amusing to hear all the dissent before a ball is kicked. It hasn't struck the preemptive naysayers that 442 shows a little bit of tactical flexibility rather than the opposite. We've been playing three mids and one striker all season and gotten smashed to bits with it, including against west ham. Deviating from that shows a bit of flexibility. The issue in the 90s with 442 wasn't that the formation was useless, it's that it was 442 everywhere all the time. It doesn't show tactical acumen to play 4231 all the time either, and as it is now the fashionable way to play and is starting to be the 'everywhere all the time' option, the truly smart tacticians will be trying to come up with formations that pick holes in it. 442 may not be the answer, but it shows a bit more guts to try to take the game to them rather than just match up with an identical formation. Eventually, 4231 or 433 of the 2010s will be the 442 of the 90s unless managers show a little dynamism and switch things around depending on the opponent.

If Sherwood goes with this for 10 games in a row, you'll have a point. But you can't know that from this one team sheet

Im pleased avb went. And im pleased with this team.

Bit of perspective please chaps...its a squad game. 4-4-2 suits us as we need to give ade and defoe game time.

There is no reason to believe this will be our team for southampton. And i doubt ade/defoe/siggy will start at the weekend too. And if they do, its because they have been superb tonight.
