There's no thread for him, so here's one. Discuss. But I thought I'd star by raising the fact that he was just suddenly dropped and has not started the last 2 league fixtures, starting with scum of all games. I can't figure that one out. Any ideas?
Its not so much that we was suddenly dropped as it was that he was suddenly inserted into the RB role in the first place. He is a fine back-up defender, capable of playing RB or CB in the PL. Naughton, and Walker, when healthy, have skills that make them suitable RBs ahead of Dier.

Its not a knock on Dier that he is not an automatic starter at his age...really not sure what you are fishing for, but I hope you catch them.

Yes, Naugton was healthy but he was red carded against West Ham......Remember? Agree with LexingtonSpurs......Both Kyle are natural RBs....so will be more suitable for RBs ahead of Dier. And Dier will be an intergral component of our back four in the near future :)

What are you talking about, Naughton HAS been healthy. Most of the time when Dier has started, Kyle has been on the bench.
Dier became first choice RB for a time there because Naughton got a straight red at west ham and he played well when he came on and was named MOM. Naughton came into the season as first choice RB, may have lost it for a few gamss there but won it back and was good leading up to the injury. Dier has done very well at RB so far but lets not forget, he is a CB forced into playing RB. He doesnt have the pace we need at the full back positions.

Dier really is a CB but was thrown into the RB position because 1) Walker is out injured 2) Naughton got a straight red vs WH 3) there were no other options. And he did a very good job as a RB at first, then his performances got bit shaky. Any "intelligent" head-coach generally follows the dictum that if a player, when given a chance and plays well, he keeps his place in the team. But Dier's lack of quick turn of pace (that a full-back needs) and experience got, at times, eventually exposed, so Naughton got his place back and deserved it.
Dier is still only 20, and this season is being used from him to settle in both at Spurs and the EPL. It's perfectly normal when a coach want to ease a young/new player into the team that he plays the "concerning player" for a few games then "rests" him and so on.

He had two bad games before he was dropped.

It wasn't really rocket science.

He's going to be a great CB and doesn't need the pressure of becoming the fan's next scapegoat when we aren't winning every game 5-NIL.

Poch has managed defence rotation really well I think.

I think the Liverpool game was not his best, and he looked a little tired. Maybe he needed a rest from the PL for a couple of games.

Remembering that the red card doesn't account for Sunderland and West Brom, where interestingly, Kyle was on the bench.

Discuss what?
Discuss him perhaps? What do you mean, what else? What do other player threads do? That was an edit to my original post, which posed a discussion point. You should have read further as there is obviously a discussion going on. It was looking at how he's been dropped for the last 2 league games.

Huh? Why did you edit the post and delete what you posted?

Well there was some good posts which answered my question. Doesn't really need discussing any more. It still leaves me wondering why Naughton was on the bench for those other games though.

Dier is 20, new to the Prem and primarily a centre back. We've seen an experienced pro in Vertonghen struggle at playing at full back when he's much more comfortable at centre back. I'd hate for us to do the same to such a young player.

Dier has shown he is a talented player. It's now the club's responsibility to nurture him properly.

Pretty much end of discussion.

This has been answered by a few other people but just to enforce the point. Dier covered at RB when Naughton was suspended. Dier performed to a decent standard and kept his spot even when Naughtons suspension was up. When he had a couple of dodgy games Naughton then won his place back.

It's pretty straightforward.

I already answered that question: I said that since Dier, when given the chance, had played so well Poch decided he deserved to keep playing. Which makes total sense.
