Who gives a fcuk, these are training ground friendlies. Doesn't matter where x plays ATM. Its probably all about giving players minutes on the pitch for fitness. We're not even wearing proper kit. If Dier plays DM against Bayern Munich then I'll start worrying!

Think its a good idea ti try Dier at DM. Hasn't Sporting's academy got a really good reputation? I imagine he would of been schooled as a complete footballer and not just a one position player. He's good enough to adapt, maybe Pochettino can mould him into the player he wants.

I actually like the idea of Dier at DM. He can tackle and has good pace. He also put in the best crosses last season when played at FB so there is some potential there. I've previously mooted the idea that we could try Chiriches there. Both are fast and good tacklers so offer protection for the defence and given that their main problems are positional (or in Vlad's case also a lack of aerial ability) that isn't so crucial when they aren't the last line of defence.

Never wanted Schneiderlin anyway ;).

I think it's bloody incredible that some people are getting upset that Dier is being tried as a CM/DM without having even seen him play. If Poch can't even try to experiment in behind closed door-friendlies without getting flak, then when is he supposed to try out new things?
It's an interesting experiment and I'm really looking forward to the MLS Allstar game. Two months without watching Spurs is just way too much

I'll try and post some pictures from the MLS game, but quite honestly I'm fucking useless at that. On a style note, should I wear a Spurs scarf to the game?

It takes a lot more fitness to play centre mid than centre back, that could be part of it, get his fitness up

He won't, it's a whole new world for a defender to play DM, a new skill set. He's a top prospect at CB. Remember when they said Ledley was good enough to play in midfield, the best centre back I've seen at my club was made to look average when England put him there against Argentina all those years ago.

People claim he is inflexible and want him to try new formations but the minute he tries something even behind closed doors people question him. Let the man be

Correct, in fact I think I'm right in saying that most of his minutes in 2013 with Sporting were as a DM.

Ledley, of course, spent a season as a DM as he was breaking through, its pretty common for CB's to do that - Jan Vertonghen broke though at Ajax as a DM before Martin Jol (then Ajax manager) converted him to be a CB.

It has occurred to me that with 5 CB's it may be in Poch's thoughts to play Dier as a DM, especially if there are no outstanding DM's available for a reasonable fee (McCarthy at £20m seemed ludicrously overvalued for example, and we might find in a season or two that our youngsters - who are technically better - relegate him to the bench).

So whilst we may continue to look at DM's to bring in, we do have a credible 'inhouse' plan if the DM to improve the first team for the next few seasons doesn't happen.

That would give a CM group of Bentaleb/Mason/Alli/Dier (with Carroll, Veljkovic available too).

Nice option to have up the sleeve

Why isnt Milos involved?

Probably because he arrived back late from the u20 WC which he won with Serbia - he played a half in the last Spurs X!/u21 match (which I think was his first pre-season appearance). Next question will be whether he is on the plane for MLS match.

There is an u21 tournament this weekend, where he might get more minutes under his belt too - and if the first team squad fly to US on Monday/Tuesday I might guess he'll play in that before being on the plane if he looks ready

he came back the same time as a lot of the first team players though.

Thought he came back later - or if not maybe had a knock as he appeared in a gym photo maybe mid July but haven't heard or seem him in pics before Spurs X1 match

Is it possible that he is in the last year of his contract, and sees no point in signing a new one?

Oduwa definitely useful looking, even in that short highlights vid he was shown to be causing defenders problems all over the place. He usually plays LW forward but has occasionally played right side.

Interestingly I think KWP may have played as a RW in the Reading match

Oduwa would give prem teams problems they won't know what to expect

True but also feels like a waste when bents and Milo's would get more benefit unless poch sees Dier as a mid which I thinks unlikely.

That seems unlikely - at best he is probably looking at playing CB in Europa games, which don't start until September.

The more likely scenario is with Mason still not back to full fitness, and without having signed a new CM, Dier is our best option at CM until Mason is fully fit.

Long-term, its probably Alli, but to start the season, I suspect Poch would rather go with a player he knows better.
