The strategy of the last few years has worked well, but that doesn't work once you break into the top four. If you want to stay and compete at that level you need to not only buy young unpolished players but also buy a top quality player(s) that sends a message to our competitors and other top players that we mean business. This will help us keep our top players and also tempt others. None of us expect Levy to pay £80m but we should be able to pay £40m and/or the larger salary to really strengthen our first eleven.
We have strengthened the squad but not the first eleven. United, city and Chelsea have.
Players that are guaranteed to improve our first eleven command wages we can't afford.
United, City and Chelsea have improved their first teams to catch us. We can't outspend them to try and stay ahead, we have to rely on good coaching and giving our young talented players space and opportunities to grow and improve.
I'm not saying anymore on this as it's the wrong thread.
