Manchester United told Eric Dier will cost £50 million

Manchester United have been quoted a £50 million valuation of the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier, whom Jose Mourinho wants signed in time for the new season.

The England international is on the list of targets that Mourinho has given to vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has so far landed Victor Lindelof the Benfica defender for £30.75 million. Mourinho regards Dier as the long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, another United acquisition from Spurs 11 years ago, who has been given another one-year extension to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2018.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s £50 million valuation of Dier is more than United expected to pay for the 23-year-old who has developed considerably under Mauricio Pochettino. He can also play at centre-back but it is in midfield that Mourinho sees him in the long term. It is there that Dier prefers to play despite having featured at centre-back for periods last season and occasionally at full-back.

Dier was warned by Pochettino in March that it was Spurs who had taken his career to another level and “provided all the tools to be a Premier League player”.

However, it is only at the traditional Premier League big payers that Dier can expect to earn the £150,000-a-week plus salaries that are not currently on offer at Spurs. He signed a new deal in September that took him to around £70,000-a-week and could probably expect another new extended contract later this year were he to stay.

Since signing Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs in 2008, United have not gone back to negotiate seriously with Levy for a player despite there having been interest in Luka Modric and Gareth Bale. Woodward and head of corporate development Matt Judge are in charge of United’s summer acquisitions and Mourinho has made it very clear that he wants Dier.

Convenient this has just arrived after the ITK.

Not sure how they've been told we'd take £50m when the clubs haven't spoken since 2008. £50m also doesn't sound a ridiculous fee to me either, it'd have to be more.

I don't care about the money, we need to make a stand this summer.

Can't believe we would quote them 50 million for a Poch favorite.

I think this reeks of United leaking this to turn Dier's head and intimating we are willing to sell him. Can't imagine we have a given a valuation at all.

Via an intermediary agent....or more likely they haven't and want to turn his head.

I'll wager anyone my significantly large scrotum that Levy will not be valuing Dier at 50 million.

Wasn't there ITK about Levy telling them they can only have Dier if we can have Rashford, as basically an F U to Utd?

Not sure on the idea United have put this out, why would they say we have valued him at £50million if we haven't? That's a sure fire way of ensuring Levy will charge them more.
I'm also pretty sure we haven't put a £50million valuation on him either, why would we do that? We'd wait for them to come up with a figure first.
Someone in the middle may be stoking the fire I reckon.

There is no smoke without fire in this case I believe. Happens or not is another thing.

With prices as crazy as they are atm with him being young and English, they'll need to add 25 million onto this amount.
