Mauricio Pochettino is back in Barcelona – the city he calls home – and he is waiting. The Tottenham manager is waiting to see whether the chairman, Daniel Levy, and the club’s recruitment staff can deliver on any of his transfer targets, who include Tanguy Ndombélé, Donny van de Beek, Nicolò Zaniolo and Ryan Sessesgnon.

Literally nothing in that article says Poch expects Levy to go out on a spending spree.
Certain points directly contradict the headline in fact!

Congratulations - You beat David Matzdorf to it.
Just trying to shut down the avalanche of people who won't actually read the article (which has more words than pictures, unlike their usual redtop garbage) but will no doubt go off on one about how this is the beginning of a new dawn for Spurs etc.

'The squad came to look stretched and it was unusual to note that each of the 25 players who began the campaign last August started at least two games in the Premier League, including the back-up goalkeepers Paulo Gazzaniga and Michel Vorm.'

Goalkeepers aside this is a strange statistic to produce.

Also I'm sure Alasdair Gold recently said Poch is now back in London...

I thought it was good article myself, not sure what you're getting so bent out of shape about?

Hytner doesn't suggest that Poch expects Levy to go on a spending spree but equally we ALL know that Poch expects things to change from what they have been previously and that means finding a way to bring new players to the club even if that means selling to buy.

It's not that I'm bent out of shape as such. It's the fact the headline

Pochettino hands Spurs shopping list to Levy and counts on him to deliver

Makes it sound very much like he expects Levy to go out and buy loads of players.

When you read the article, it says no such thing. It actually goes on to say he knows the constraints we work with and that a lot hinges on Eriksen being sold to balance the books.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

No doubt it is full of hyberbole; however, it would be naive to think that Poch doesn't have a list of targets that he is looking at DL to at least attempt to deliver.

If the cost of buying new players
has to be balanced
by the sale of Eriksen
I'd rather stick than twist.

If Eriksen stays
then the net spend
will almost certainly be less
than 50 million
which might buy one experienced midfielder
and a couple of promising youngsters.
Assuming that 2/3 fringe players go
and/or Trippier/ Wanyama to generate funds.

Trouble is just before the window shuts somebody like PSG or RM (if the Pogba situation turns to dust) could come in for Eriksen with a great offer that Spurs have to turn down because it's too late to find a suitable replacement. We are then left with a decidedly unhappy player who has just one year left on his contract.....just a thought.

Do you think ???..........no seriously, the Pogba saga could drag on and on and then implode...RM come back to Spurs with a huge offer just as the window is closing and they have to reject it. I'm not happy with the way Eriksen declared his desire to move to a fresher challenge and he must be peeved it didn't bring any offers flooding in. Poch either has to try and sell him ASAP and target replacements or get Eriksen to sign a new contract now and do away with all the rumours and speculation surrounding his future. The alternative is he could do a moody on us for his last season....then walk away scott free.
That's what I think....(n) (I think)

Look, expect the worst and anything above that is a bonus!

We’re not spending the sort of dough people are suggesting. Keeping Eriksen and signing Lo Celso and Ndombele...a decent bet would be to expect none of them to be at the club come August 10th!

I’m sure we’ll get there eventually but it’s a difficult one to balance. Patience is the key

When we do get there it’ll be sustained, not a one off short period.

There isn't much news in this article, nor is the headline sensationalist. Hytner ends with - "One thing is clear. Pochettino is counting on Levy to deliver something" - maybe he's referring to milk.

What is interesting is a focus on how to increase our 'floor' in terms of performances. I reckon we'd all agree with that focus. Our ceiling is as good as it's been. On our day, we can beat anyone. But when things aren't clicking, we struggle more than we should. Hytner suggests the CL final is viewed by Poch and the staff as "they were crap and we were a bit better than that, but that was still good enough for them". I wholeheartedly agree. Such a regretful display.

Anyway, that's a good framework for this window. Raise our floor. We need our baseline to improve. We need nearly all of those 60 points from the bottom half.

And to that end, we need at least 2 new first teamers, rather than window dressing. I suspect Sessegnon could be a very good signing for us, but that'll likely come after we get a more assured 1st teamer.
