IMO the offside law should be changed to clear daylight (ir similar term) between the attacking and defending players and not millimetres of a foot being ahead of play. If any part of the body is level it's onside.

Agreed.

The idea behind the offside rule, like handball, fouls and so on, is simply to prevent a team from getting an unfair advantage. Having a toe a millimetre over an imaginary line is not an unfair advantage and shouldn’t be penalised.
.
.

This only shifts the imaginary line to a different spot. You'll still have cases where the player is offside by a millimeter. It doesn't eliminate the problem.

I welcomed VAR, but the way things are going it is taking enjoyment out of the game. Especially with the inconsistency and the doubt of celebrating a goal.
It's all down to the ppl in control of these decisions. CONMEBOL have made s right pig's ear of it.

Lo Celso makes the foul, Argentina break and get a corner. Everyone is waiting for the corner to be taken, Argentina decide to sub Dybala and Argentina then take the corner kick only for the ref to halt play and state VAR is to be checked.

All of the fans were completely baffled as to what was going on and had no idea what was happening.

Maybe VAR need some sort of timer, if they can't decide within a certain time limit they move on as when you get so much happening afterwards it kind of makes a joke of it. At least until they are able to come to quicker conclusions.

If Argentina had have scored on that break, considering the time taken it's likely they would have celebrated and then Chile taken the kick off before the ref stopped for VAR.

I thought VAR was spot on during the WC and largely in the CL which highlights if you don't have the right personnel then it ain't going to work.

That’s all in the framing and drafting.

I’m talking about the principle of being satisfied that an unfair advantage is being sought or gained in marginal cases, and allowing the referee that degree of discretion, and using VAR to assist the referee and not to replace them.

So you want a system where it comes down to the opinion of the referee if an offside player is marginally offside or really offside? That sounds even worse than what we have now.

It's simple if the attacking player has his whole body ahead of the defender then he is offside at present people are being called offside if only their toe is offside it's ridiculous. If they can determine if a player is wholey offside then and only then should they use VAR to change/uphold the decision.

No, I want a system that isn’t as pedantic, artificially “technical”, and out of touch with the intention behind the rule and the nature of the game.

Tons of clarification here on how VAR will be used in the PL this season. It sounds good to me, but it's worrying just how differently rules are going to be enforced between different competitions.

https://www.thstofficial.com/thst-news/thst-attends-premier-league-var-session

The whole "we're gonna apply the laws differently here because we disagree with the interpretations" would make a lot more sense if the home nations didn't have 4 of the 8 votes on the board that makes the laws in the first place.

Love the bit about Vertonghen encroachment on the pen vs Arsenal and THST rep getting clarification that it shouldn’t have been a pen in the first place (got to make sure all banter angles are covered ;))

I think what constitutes a new phase of play is going to cause carnage this year.

I really worry the linespeople are going to let some fairly blatant offsides go leading to a goal in a different phase of play but after a period of pressure in the final third.

I thought the new rules were that any handball, accidental or otherwise (re: CL Final), in the box is a penalty or goal disallowed if by an attacking player!!? So, Wolves have a goal disallowed for handball but we didn't get the penalty yesterday!! I'm confused!!

It's only for the attackers where any accidental handball is an offense.

Is that the official ruling?

Here's the law itself.

It is an offence if a player:

gains possession/control of the ball after it has touched their hand/arm and then:

scores in the opponents’ goal,

creates a goal-scoring opportunity or

scores in the opponents’ goal directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper

I like the concept of VAR but I fucking hate what it will do to football. Its so picky - did they draw the line at the exact same points on both players shoulders in the Spam v Shitty game? how do we know because that one mm could have made all the difference.

On a separate note why didnt we get the handball penalty yesterday when Sissoko was given a handball against int he CL final? It is shit like that that I dont get although I suspect that is more a ruling than a VAR issue.

The game just can’t have so many interruptions as there were in the spammers v city. Completely disrupts the game and fans no longer know whether to cheer or not for goals. It is making a nonsense of the game.

They're doing all they can to fuck this up imo so the demand to get rid of it once and for all is too large to deny.
We wanted VAR.
Nobody said fk all about 30sec goal decisions, new handball, drop ball, freekicks and offside laws.
