Suitors are being encouraged to make their move for Alderweireld as it’s common knowledge that the Belgian has a £25m release clause until July 26, 2019.

Serie A side Roma have been linked with a possible swoop for Alderweireld in recent days. On Thursday, Gazzetta dello Sport told their readers that Roma hope to sign Alderweireld at an even larger discount price: €12m. Roma believe they can pay under half of Alderweireld’s current release clause because the defender only has a year to run on his Spurs contract, while the Belgian turns 31 in 2020.

not sure if am happy for us to get the money ( £25M not £12M) or keep him for another season and go free.
but i guess it would all depend on where he would end up going too.

A release clause is a release clause... The only way they get him for half the price is if Toby kicks up a mega shit storm about it.
The reason it's £25 million is because there's only a year left. He's a £50+ million defender.

There's no clear explanation for why they should think that. On the face of it, it's obvious nonsense: the only way the club can be forced to sell is if someone offers a figure at or over the release clause and Alderweireld wants to play for them. If the club gets an offer of €12m, surely they will take the view that another year of his services, followed by a free transfer, is better value than selling a €40m (guess) defender for €12m.

Aside from him still being a very good defender, we have a several young central defenders who could benefit greatly from his company for another year.

How much could Roma offer Toby to make it worthwhile for him to move there? As far as I'm concerned, Roma is a step down.

What are the reasons Toby wants to leave? Money? Trophies? Bigger Club? I could understand RM, or Barca, etc. But Roma?? As Eriksen said, 'there's not many teams in Europe that are bigger/better than Tottenham these days'

Roma clearly got the wrong end of the stick when they found out the Levy likes a lowball starting offer.

I dont think he wants to leave. I think he wanted a bigger contract than we were prepared to offer a season or so back, and burnt some bridges during the negotiations.

Right. OK, I remember that, just thought he wanted out after that. Well I think people need to kiss and make up. He's world class. Lets not shoot ourselves in the foot!

We should just offer Toby a new four year contract and let him end his career with us... the same with Jan.
