Tottenham launch raid on Leeds for £30m midfielder Kalvin Phillips

EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham have already signed Jack Clarke from Leeds and are ready to raid Elland Road again

Tottenham have launched a second raid on Leeds after joining the bidding for rising midfield star Kalvin Phillips.

Tottenham have already paid Leeds £9million for teenage winger Jack Clarke, who is remaining on loan at Elland Road next season, and are now targeting Phillips.

Spurs can offer Phillips Champions League football and a hefty increase on his current £10,000-a-week salary at Leeds.

Aston Villa have made the early running in the race to sign Phillips, who was named in the EFL Team of the Season, and have offered £11million.

Newcastle are also keen on the Leeds academy graduate, while Bournemouth and Wolves are understood to have cooled their initial interest.

Leeds remain adamant that any Premier League suitor will have to pay around £30million for Phillips and they are desperate to hang on to the versatile holding midfielder.

Phillips is a boyhood Leeds fan and the club are confident he will not agitate for a move.

They have tabled him a new contract to reward him for his progress and are confident he will stay, even though he has rejected their opening offer.

Heard he played well last season but ask the question. Is he going to help us challenge for the league?!

Was just going to post this link. Leeds fans seem pretty intent on slagging off the credibility of the journalist on Twitter - suggesting he's simply thrown Spurs name in to replace the fact that Villa have 'cooled their interest' and mean he can carry on dragging his original story out for clicks.

Seen Phillips a couple of times and he's energetic and mobile, and good at breaking up play with timely interceptions. Good tidy passing too. At this stage, he's probably an upgrade on Wanyama and HG too. Not sure if we'd go to 30m for him though

Haven't really seen much of him - can anyone expand on the 'holding midfielder' bit ? Is that exactly what he is or is he more versatile ? If that's basically his forte, then seems a bit unlikely at the price doesn't it ??

For those worried about a lack of DM targets, here you go!

Young, highly rated and homegrown, playing for a Bielsa team. Can see why we've looked at him. Think Dier or Wanyama would have to be off though.

You'd think a deal could be struck in the £20-25m region looking at the figures in the article.

Yeah he’s a tidy passer and a lot more mobile than Dier and Wanyama. Would be a good addition if we can shift some midfielders. Still, he’s not as young as you might think and it does make you wonder how someone like Skipp would perform in a similar role under Bielsa

Looks like he can play as a centre back in a 3 as well, according to Wiki - so would make sense if he's versatile as we know that gets Poch's Johnson rigid.

My Leeds mate was glad when we bought Clarke as it meant they wouldn’t need to sell Philips.

I doubt there’s anything in this link but if Wanyama really isn’t going to get back to previous levels, this kid would be a shrewd signing. Him, Winks, Dier, Ndombele and Sissoko would give us great options at CM.

We could probably do the same as we did with Clarke and loan him back with the options we already have.

23 is pretty young to me these days, but I appreciate what you mean, the definition can vary wildly. I'm sure when I was addicted to Football Manager at college I would have considered that peak age :ROFLMAO:

Seems incredibly unlikely if, as suggested, he's 'just' a young tidy DM. Already got Winks (who's a DM and a lot more besides), Skipp who could be equally good given time, and although i only see 5 or 6 youth games a season, Harvey White always caught my eye in midfield (not sure he's a DM though ?). Unless he's massively gone under the radar of just about everyone else, Philips doesn't sound like a player ready to start for a top 4 side in a crucial position, so just can't see it as a credible link at all.

What I will say is the guy is bringing attention to himself by claiming it as a big exclusive. You'd need some brass to do that with no sources.

The Skipp question is a valid one to raise. Could well just block his development. I could only see this if Wanyama leaves and Dier moves back to centre half to replace Toby or leaves.
