So still wondering why the VAR checks every goal even when it appears at first glance unnecessary?

I guess the thinking is that it's a natural break in play anyway, so why wouldn't you have a look just to make sure? Agree it's a bit frustrating on the clear-cut goals though.

In the French league last night, there was a penalty in the Nantes vs Marseille game given after VAR check.

Cross comes in and the ball goes between the attacking Marseille player trying to head it and the defending Nantes' player's arm just standing there marking him. Hits head and arm. Ref decided it was a penalty because the arm helped block a header and was slightly out of position anyway. Commentators said the attacker pulled the defender out of position to begin with. So that's a penalty..

Didn't matter though. Benedetto smashed it over the bar and into orbit.

Not the best but there is a screenshot in this report: https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football...ompletement-un-penalty-litigieux-1751251.html

Some of the pundit criticism of VAR is starting to verge on Luddite stuff. You’d think goals had never been disallowed in the history of football before.

It’s all bollocks. People don’t like change. People also don’t like goals being given when there was an infringement. People need to suck it up. Under the old rules we would have lost and Spurs fans would be complaining about a handball while fans of other teams would be taking the piss. Bollocks to them. We weren’t screwed over, neither were City. Give VAR more time to settle and people will treat it as standard much the same as they have previous rules. People love moaning. People are adaptable.

VAR seems to be getting the vast majority of the decisions right, but there's still a lot of moaning. It seems to be as much about not liking the rules as much as bit liking VAR now.
I don't know why Shearer was going on about the players not appealing for the handball yesterday. I doubt any of them could see it and VAR is there to help the ref with the stuff he can't see.

What if the ref was the only one to see it and the players didn’t appeal? Does that mean it’s not handball too? Shearer talking shite because he knows he has to complain and hadn’t got his head around what he wanted to complain about.

This argument of 'you don't know whether to celebrate or not cause it might get ruled out'. Have we not had this scenario for years?! Plenty of games over the years where your team scores, you celebrate only to realise the linesman has his flag up for offside.

Every team will benefit and lose out somewhere along the line with this VAR thing and you'll see the likes of City fans reversing with their praise of it when they benefit. All I hear is "its sucking the life out of our beautiful game" aww boo fucking hoo! No it isn't...Money is sucking the life out of the game and it has been for donkeys years. Var is going some way to levelling the field if you want my opinion on it, albeit slightly. It is new and will eventually get ironed out. Even if Spurs lose out as a result of this system ill STILL be in favour of it. If it wasn't introduced we'd still have those desperately unfair decisions occurring which was more of a kick in the teeth imo, anyone remember Pedro Mendes vs Utd? Man City should have been out of sight against us, but they weren't. They should not have to have an assisted goal to do the job because if it hadn't have hit his arm it wouldn't have fallen to Jesus.

Yep. He always moans that players shouldn't have to go down to get a penalty, so you can't then say that you can't get a free kick if you don't appeal for it.

IMHO VAR is a pain mainly ATM because it now gives pundits and the press even more to drivel prattle endlessly on about.
Other than that and may need a tweak or two in the coming seasons, it fine

Exactly. I'm glad I no longer work in an office cause the endless Monday morning greetings of "VAR is ruining the game" would be excruciating

I am in favour of VAR and believe it is already clamping down on cheating that has embarrassed the game for so long.

It certainly needs some tweaking.

I don’t agree with some of the current rules. I think the offside rule is too strict and the idea that the ball touching the hand in a buildup to a goal is automatically disallowed is nonsense.

It's called football for a reason. The ball touching the hand was always handball but was relaxed about 20 years ago now they've brought back and rightly so. I agree offside should be clear daylight between attacker and defender and not just a foot or toe.

But if that is the case then the ball hitting the hand anywhere on the pitch , regardless of following actions should be handball.

I just don’t agree that the ball accidentally hitting a hand leading to a goal is handball but anywhere else it isn’t.

For me handball is handball end of. Same as offside regardless if you are interfering with play. Make the fuckers learn how to play the game properly and earn those millions.

I fail to see how the man City player didn't know it had hit his arm.......yet I see him run off to celebrate knowing if it was given he had cheated.
