What a waste, he's going to be spending a couple of months in his prime on the bench.

Football can change very quickly though. An injury or two and he’s back in and could easily become first choice again.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up signing a new contract.

I think the opportunity was there, but for whatever reason we couldn’t make it happen. I’m not convinced we’d sort an image rights issue even if we have longer to work on it. Most things can be solved with money and I think in the end it will take a lot of money to make this problem go away. Probably more money than we ultimately are prepared to pay.

I forgot where I read it (maybe on here) but apparently we didn't even really get a fee agreed with Juve and their representatives left on deadline day saying deal off and that they got cold feet

I don't think that there was any ITK saying that.

This won't be of much use to you because you can't know where I get this from, but I have good reason to believe that Spurs have not given up hope of solving the image rights problem.

For those who are sceptical about image rights being the problem, you are mistaken. It is of course a much bigger issue here in the UK than it is elsewhere since our laws on shared ownership, which this sort of image rights deal transgresses, are so much stricter than they are on the continent.

That means that while other non-UK clubs could simply come to agreement with the rights holders over how to share income, THFC can't do that. They have to buy the rights holders out completely and permanently so as to prevent shared ownership, and that, naturally, is a whole different and far more expensive operation than a fee-sharing or fee-surrendering deal.

But he's the player we want, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Juventus, Spurs and the player are not the problem. The problem is that that the rights owners simply have so far refused to be bought out at anything resembling an affordable price, and may continue to do so. They hold most of the cards because they still get paid anyway, for the rest of the player's career.

Seems a likely scenario, but imo strengthens my view that it won’t happen. As I said in a post above, most things can be solved with money and I doubt we’d be prepared to pay the type of money that can persuade the image rights company to surrender their rights.

Yes, you're probably right.

I'm just passing on info that we can each evaluate for ourselves.

I dont think anyone believes we’ve given up. Thought its widely accepted we still want him and are in for him. But again, just like this sunmer, it will not happen. Image rights holders refuse to sell for the price we’d pay.

It's going to be difficult if they don't want to sell, but I wonder if we could find a solution by agreeing a fee to buy the rights now and then giving them a buy back clause if he leaves the club. Say buy the rights for £5M, but then sell back for £100K when he leaves. Obviously it would be more complicated than that as you'd need to take into account contract extensions and the figures are completely made up so you'd need to take potential earnings into consideration, but I'm sure Levy could find a creative solution.

I’m not a lawyer but as I understand it the club has been investigating lots of potential arrangements but so far they all fall foul of the UK laws on joint ownership.

Finding a legitimate way to do a deal that is legal and doesn’t double the fee is what is still exercising minds.

Surely if that’s the case then FIFA need to get involved. There’s no way these kind of ownership deals sound legal at all or even fair to the player. Sounds like exploitation to me.

I think these type of deals were specifically designed to circumnavigate the rules against third-party ownership that FIFA introduced in 2015.

Yes, I think the law needs to catch up with them.

I mean with FP as our DoF, he would most likely have a unique insight into his contract, and the player himself.
