433 please. We need to be able to cover the flanks and not leave our FBs exposed. If we push the back 4 up too high we'll get crucified. Lamela and Son will have to put in a shift tracking TAA and Robertson. I'd be tempted to put Dier in at DM where he can drop into CB if we get any joy going forward. Same team as Red Star with Dier into DM at the expense of Dele. Maybe a bit harsh on him but he's a nice option off the bench.

Gazza

Aurier
Sanchez
Vertonghen
Davies

Sissoko
Dier
Ndombele

Lamela
Kane
Son

Vorm, Foyth, Toby, Winks, Dele, Lo Celso, Lucas.

Funnily enough, Liverpool is probably the only team against which the diamond has been somewhat successful, as seen in the 4-1 victory at Wembley 2 years ago, and also the 2nd half against them at Anfield last season.

On the one hand I'd like to see the exact same starting 11 from yesterday, to build some form and cohesion, on the other hand that'll probably play directly into Liverpools hands. I remember us lining up in a 4-2-3-1 at Anfield in the 16/17 season, and Davies getting absolutely roasted by Mané. We were lucky to get away with only a 2-0 loss that day.

Torn between starting with the same team and swapping Winks for Sissoko.

Winks is at his best in games where we're not dominating the ball and I expect that to be the case on Sunday.

As I've said in the Poch thread: Winks for Dele or Sissoko the only change for me. Probably Dele even though his form is picking up.

Dier is a liability in games like this, Brighton's press destroyed him, let alone Liverpool's. Winks has proven pretty press resistant against them (see CL Final). Ndombele I feel can play a more advanced CM role and he is our best passer in that area. Sissoko has the mobility to help out Aurier with Mane.

Son and Lamela to hold wider positions to keep the FBs occupied. Kane may get isolated but unfortunately that can happen away at top 6. Hopefully Ndombele can get him into positions where he can find the wide men in transition.

Gazza - Aurier, Sanchez, Verts, Davies - Winks, Sissoko, Ndombele - Lamela, Son, Kane

P.S. That said if Poch wants to start the same XI I'd be behind him, I'm just thinking what I'd consider against Liverpool specifically.

I'd say there's little chance Winks doesn't start this game.

Also, we saw from yesterday that if you think Son is going to cover the fullback in a 433 you are leaving yourself open as he simply won't be able to do it without switching off a few times (at least)
Not that i wouldn't play Son, i just wouldn't put him in a position where him tracking men is a necessity.
Lamela is a must for his energy. But if we can play with some heart and speed as we did at times yesterday (albeit against weak opposition) then who knows...

I know where you are getting at with Son but any formation we play with him in a 2 with Kane gives their full backs pretty free reign. Usually you'll take that but it's a real strength of theirs. Might just have to be something we really work on tactically this week, either Son's defensive work or having one of the CMs cover his side.

No easy solution when playing the European Champions unfortunately.

Hope Poch will not get it too complicated. Emery tried with little success

I'd rather stick to formation which better fits us, be it 4231 or whatever

(Imo) that’s why you need Dele Alli supporting Kane slightly dropped off and with instructions to beef up midfield.

You have to admit it's quite a funny dilemma, the one time a formation change might have been debatable was vs Liv after United showed a good way to deal with them but it would be so risky for Poch to change after landing on a winning formula.

I would hope Poch wouldn't mess around too much with last nights team.

I didn't think either Verts or Aurier were great, so I might changes these.

I agree that we need to play pressing, attacking football. We can't 'park the bus' and expect to contain Liverpool, but if we can protect our defence, we can avoid a tonking. Keeping Dele and Kane together and playing clever passes to give Son space to run at will keep us dangerous. Lamela and Ndombele make and score goals. Those are our strengths, and we'd be crazy to not play to our strengths against the best team in the league.

I agree but still we need to keep strong on the defensive side.We need two midfielders behind NDombele and for him to just push forward and create

If Eriksen, Toby or Rose are in the team (or even squad) then Poch has not turned the corner.

Gazza
Aurier Sanchez Verts Davies
Sissoko Ndombele
Lamela Dele Son
Kane

Subs: Vorm, KWP, Foyth, Sessegnon, Dier, Lo Celso, Parrott

Ndombele is a must. I also think he needs to play deep as he is the only one who'll be able to bypass their press with his quick, precise vertical passing. If he plays too far advanced i fear he would not see anywhere near as much of the ball as we need him to. He needs to be in front of their pressing, not behind it.

I can see that. I just think Ndombele is a better passer and dribbler in the deeper areas than Dele is, and on current form I wouldn't put much between them on goalscoring potential either. The Dele/Kane partnership is 100% something we need to build around, I'm just not sure if it's right for Sunday.

Gazzaniga

Aurier Sanchez Vertonghen Davies

Dier Ndombele

Lamela Dele Son

Kane

Lamela has to start for me as it’s no reward for a player to put in a performance like his and then not start.

Dele plays an important role slotted in behind Kane even if he can be frustrating at times, he is important to the system.

Son left no brainer (not up front in a strike partnership with Kane Poch!).

Tough choice between Sissoko and Dier but think against Liverpool would benefit from having a more defensive midfielder in front of back four, which is still fragile in confidence.

Usually would say rotate Rose for Davies but Rose confidence shot at moment so I’d stick with Davies.
