It's all very interesting to hypothesise about this 'new' revelation of one attacking and one defensive fullback and switching to a back 3 with one FB pushing up blah, blah, blah. It also occurs to me that maybe Mourinho used this format purely based on what players he had available at the time and how much he rated them. If he did, it was very well thought out and effective. It could also equally be something good that he stumbled on out of necessity.

Might also mean we could switch to a 3-5-2- and play Aurier and Sessegnon as wing backs if need be.

Although that would be more if Son wasn't available as not convinced he should be pushed up top with Kane as they get in each other's way and operate far better when Son has been on the left.

It could be a 3-5-1-1 though with Dele remaining behind Kane.

Good stuff.
I'd also say Kane has been playing slightly further forward (and is getting caught offside as a result.)
But the opponent's defence get unsettled and drop back giving more space to the like of Dele and Son.
It is no coincidence Dele has had his best couple of games imo.

Generally I hope we have a good couple of years of scratching our heads working out what Mourinho is up to.
This guy knows his stuff, but then so did Ramos and that did not end well. The players did not understand what was being asked of them and rejected his methods.

The BIG difference is that we move the ball into their half quickly, no more slow boring passing from the back if other attacking opportunities exist. Who said JM's football was negative. BIG improvement in a very short time!

He said as much himself didn't he. He tailored the system the the strengths of the players.

Maybe Aurier should play in a more advanced position with cover behind. That way evertime he goes to tackle someone we wouldn't all have a heart attack...

Sanchez has moved to right centre back I think to cover Aurier on that side using his pace
I can see Vertonghen playing left back particularly if we continue with a tucked in left back
