Well Dele wasn't really playing that high up the pitch for the past 2 seasons under Poch as he prefered Lucas or Son alongside Kane, neither of which have Dele's gift for making those types of runs. Why hoof it if there's noone to get on the end of it?

I completely agree with the sentiment though. I don't think Toby wanted to leave simply because he couldn't punt it upfield anymore, but rather because Poch's new system quite simply wasn't very effective and didn't get the best out of our players. Poch was so determined to change our system and reinvent the wheel that he didn't stop to consider whether he should.

I personally like us to see hoofing the ball from time to time. For various reasons:

- We do not dangle around at the back waiting for an accident to happen
- We do not always have a slow build up which allows the other team to get into positions behind the ball
- Even if the long ball doesn't succeed there is the second ball there for the taking in the opponents half

It causes the opponents defence always to be alert to win the header and think of where to head.

As longs as we do not have a quality deep laying playmaker a la Modric I think this is a build up possibilty we used too rarely under Poch the last months.

Yes, the ability to play from the back can come in handy. It stretches the field, and can lead to good scoring opportunities. It's how Spurs scored the equalizer against Barcelona and got us out of the CL group stage last year.

But it is just a means to an end, and shouldn't be the only tool in the tool bag. If the opposition high presses well, then kick it over them. It's not that complicated.

I read on another site that Alerwerield was instructed to stop the long pass (normally to Dele ) who would be anticipating this move .
Obviously I don't know if this is true but it is a fact that Toby has not been making this long pass for at least the last year .
It would go part to explain Dele fall off in form
It could be part of the reason Toby wants out as apparently he was not on board with Poch on this one.
Playing Dele out of position is part of his poor form .
It was said that Poch wanted to play out from the back and thru midfield with no more long passes.
I don't know how much truth there is in this but it would explain the way we have been playing for the last year.
I wonder if Poch got carried away and wanted to play like Man City who knows.
But it would explain why Alderwerield is disgruntled and explain why Dele had stopped making these runs to anticipate a Toby pass .

The irony is we're playing a style closer to man city now than with Poch. There is a misconception that city don't play direct when actually they do when they can. They play the ball in behind the fullback for Sterling and Silva to get on to and then look for the cut back in the box. This obviously only works against teams that push up and press. The short passing only comes in against teams that play deep and even then they're still looking for the dinked pass behind the fullback.

As for Alli, I think we need to remember that he played that deeper CM role due to our injury problem mainly and not because of a change in tactical approach. My question was why we never went back to the way we used to play when the injuries subsided.

I am paraphrasing now " the best managers are not always the ones playing the best football or winning the most matches at that moment in time but the ones who can adapt " words to that effect is what Mourhino has said and I believe that what we are seeing now to what was happening at United and his last spell at Chelsea is him adapting .
I don't know for fact but he seems to be changing his normal modus operandi .

Don't know if this has already been posted here;

I also posted it on the The Athletic thread but it might not catch the attention of all that many.

A few years ago a poster made a silly little typo so I made a silly little joke about it.

He sent me a long ranting email. I sent him a reply saying no offence was intended but such a reaction to a silly joke was strange.

Didn’t see him post again after that.
I miss @StartingPrice!

Certainly this to an extent.

I think one of the things that Poch got himself all in a pickle over, was trying to find the right balance between attack and defence, in order to solve that elusive "winning a trophy" problem. Jose is already finding that he can let our attacking players off the leash, and they will score bags of goals. But there's this balance in midfield that he needs to figure out to stop the tide of conceded goals. I don't think its as simple as just our defenders needing to be better, but that the midfield isn't stemming the tide further up.

Bournemouth had 20 chances against us. That's not a simple case of our defenders not defending well, but more our midfield not protecting them well enough.

I had a pm from one poster having a go at me for correcting his grammar the other day, and he disabled the reply option so I couldn’t come back to him.

To my mind correcting grammar is a staple and time honoured SC tradition and should be taken in the spirit with which it is usually intended.

Maybe try doing it with a sense of humour next time ?

Should have directed him to the opposing fans thread:woot:

Where do you see that chances stat, out of curiosity? Hadn't heard of that before.

I dont mind one pass and one coming back its shifts the opposition but sometimes we do it for 15 or 20 minutes
